Christmas Came Early on the Coralville Reservoir.

‘Twas the day before Christmas, when all through the lake not a creature was stirring not even our baits. The Marcums were flashing by the ice hole with care in hopes that a slab crappie would quickly appear. The children were nestled all snug in their bed. ( well at least Luke, he overslept. ) with visions of CJ&S Blue/Silver Foil Lightning spoons dancing in his head. ( Finally once he arrived ) Luke in his Kerchief and me in my stocking cap had just settled in for a few winter taps. When out of Marcum there arose such clatter so many fish, I dropped to my knees to so see what they were after. Down went the ice jig away in a flash up came the crappie shining like glass.

The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow. Gave the luster of Mid-morning objects swimming below. There were no miniature fish to be caught this fine day. Everything on the ice was a trophy they say. The fish hit our baits and the laughter began. By the end of this fine day we would all have fish in the pan. When the day finally ended and we had destinations in sight…. Well, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

  1. Nice fish!! I’ve been doing really well on the panfish as well. Although I don’t mind people that keep a LOT of fish….I enjoy releasing my fish so they get bigger (potential trophy size) and increasing the chances that other people will catch some fish as well. Good Fishing!!!

  2. Found em hey Luke! Very nice catch. Wonder how they will do in the spring with minnows under a slip bobber, probably hammer them. Thats a very nice catch and it looks like you found a good spot. Theres nothing like cold winter water crappie fillets with some tarter sauce, salt and pepper deep fried.

BM- I completely agree with you, this was the first, and probably the last time I will keep fish- these fish went to three Christmas fish frys. They were my “gift” to my grandparents.

I would much rather eat grilled tuna, tilapia, or salmon, and catch photo and release the game fish.

On a side note, I caught this “slab” crappie out on Macbride today. He was 12″ on the nose, and that is a big boy for Macbride. He was photoed and released. Also caught on that blue silver foil lightning spoon.

I honestly have not taken that spoon off my rods yet. It catches big gills, big crappies, hybrids, spotted bass, largemouth, and walleyes. Not many baits out there that can do that for me. The best part about it, I have not been using ANY bait on them.

  5. Nice fish guys.I do not ever remember a catch like that out of Coraville in winter nice job

  6. Don’t quit my day job???? Bummer, I was so looking forward to NOT being a computer engineer…. Maybe I should try Bass Fishing… – insert evil grin-

  7. Nice job fellas, good to see that kind of action in the area. How thick of ice are you running into. Any hints on depths of those tanks, were they suspended or hugging bottom? I’ve yet to hit the hard water yet, believe it or not the walleye are still hitting in open water on the interior rivers. Wintering holes and adjacent sand flats are the ticket, pretty boring(not to mention freezing) way to catch them almost deadsticking it but effective. Your recent ice posts may make me rethink my next trip.

  8. Great catch guys. Great to see some people remember there grandparents when you catch a nice mess of fish. I also give fillets to some older people because they can not handle the cold any more.

  9. Alright, time to get done with the late muzzy hunting and get back to fishing! You’re making me jealous. Great job and thanks for sharing the pics!

    Stay safe and good fishing.
