I had the chance to get out on pool 4 this Christmas afternoon with my co-worker and good buddy Mike (Big Bird on the site) to do some walleye fishing. Mike had never tried dragging jigs so our goal was to teach him a little about this effective technique.
We arrived at Evert’s at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and the weather was perfect. It was in the low 30’s and there was very little wind. Surprisingly there was only one other truck and trailer parked there. We launched the boat and were on our way.
After a quick rundown of how to drag jigs we got the poles out and went to work. It did not take long before we were slamming the walleyes and saugers. The bite is going very good right now. These fish are on a tear!!!!!!
we started out dragging in about 18 feet of water with 3/16 ounce jigs and as it got closer to dark moved up to 6-8 feet of water with 3/32 ounce jigs. The best colors ringworms for us were firecracker/chartreuse and purple chartreuse. These were our best colors but, to be honest, these were the only colors we had tried. I am sure oystershell, cotton candy, and any of the chartreuse would have worked well too. It seems these fish just want something to chew on. Our go to speed was 0.7 upstream and 1.2 downstream with a much better bite on the upstream passes. speed was very important today. If we were going a couple tenths too fast or too slow our bite decreased dramatically.
Now is the time guys. These fish are really snapping. as a matter of fact I talked with one gentleman today about his luck out there. He was a bit disappointed with his success. He and another man had fished for about 4 hours today and he estimated they caught about 60 fish vertical jigging. Why was he disappointed??? Because the saugers they had caught were only 14-18 inches. Sometimes us locals can take for granted just how good we have it around here.
By the way guys, I just took a peek at the extend weather forecast. It is showing highs in the high 20’s/low 30’s through the new year. This is perfect weather to get the boat out for some river action. You won’t find a better bite anywhere right now.
If you haven’t had the chance to fish the winter season on pool 4 yet be sure to stop in at Evert’s and Dean will set you up with everything you need to be successful.
Go get ’em guys!!!!!
Thanks, Now ya got me thinking about the boat again. LOL That never goes away. Nice report Lenny.
Nice report Lenny. It’s that time of year again
I was hoping to get down on Monday but things just didnt work out. Might get a day off this week and if I do I will be down. Either way it’s looking like I will be down this weekend. Hopefully see ya around soon.
Great Report
getting the 12′ ready
Great report Lenny, was thinking of getting out myself soon.
Good Report, Lenny.
My boat has had the exact same results the last 3 weeks. Dragging has been fantastic and the vertical bite has been pretty good too. This is, indeed, prime-time!!!
Dean at Everts has been scratching his head a little bit about the lack of fisherman on the river right now. With the bite this good, you would expect a lot more boats.
Really appreciate the report, Lenny. Still have open water on the brain, and these kinds of reports get my creative juices going……how to make it over to Pool 4 in December or January. My March and fall trips just don’t seem to cut it.
Great report Lenny, I’ve got to get down there some time in the next couple of weeks.
Nice fish Lenny.I we get that weather you mentioned I hope we get the weather you mentioned
