Lake of The Woods walleye report 12-16-07

Myself and 7 others made our early season run to Lake of the Woods this past weekend staying at WigWam Resort. Historically, this time frame has given us some of the best ice fishing of the season. The fisrt day was our best fishing. The sun was out which helped out the fishing, but the morning temps were cold at -20. 1 house had a nice limt of walleyes between 16-18″ with 3 saugers as well. The other house didn’t catch quite as many fish, but did managed to catch this 28.5″ beauty! Both houses caught small fish that were released. The houses were in 23′. The best baits were smaller gold jigging spoons with the GoDevil and Buckshot being the best tipped with a fathead or river shinner. Not many fish came on a bobber, but the big one did.

The second day we were out was cloudy with light snow. The fishing was much slower. About noon we were moved to a different house in deeper water, 27′. We did manage to scrape a few fish, but not as good as day 1. There was no shortage of fish coming through on the flasher, but biters were few and far between. We switched baits the whole day and the same 2 jigging spoons caught the majority of the fish.

There was roughly 11″ of ice. The resorts were using a mix of trailers and bombers to haul ice anglers, but trucks were not being let out yet. I didn’t see any slush on the ice and atv riders seemed to get around with ease. Agreat time was had by all and a big thanks goes out to Tom and Judy and the rest of the WigWam gang! Look forward to being back up in 2 weeks!
