Mille Lacs Lake fishing report 12-19-07

After spending the last few trips on the mud flats. Today I changed things up and hit the rock’s! I have not fished the shallow rock reefs out front for the past week. Today I didn’t get out till mid afternoon just allowing time to find my early evening spot.

I had fished a spot on the southwest tip of the Flamingo Reef a number of times last year with some mixed success. So my plan was to drill some holes and find that spot again. The perch were the first to show themselves on the MarCum. From 2:30pm to 3:45 it was all perch. The last 2 feet near the bottom had small fish passing through the entire time. At just before 4pm the walleyes started to move up on the rocks. The break that I was setup on came from 20+ fow up to 16 fow in just a short distance. I was setup in around 17 1/2 fow on a hard gravel bottom. I caught 4 walleye in just over 20 minutes time tonite. When I caught the last fish at 4:20pm it all ended as fast as it had started.

Today I caught all my fish on a 1/8oz orange/yellow go-devil tipped with a head of a fathead minnow. The walleye were pretty aggresive tonite. They would appear on the MarCum and move right in on the bait. Not much playing around with them at all. The slots were 16 to 18 1/2 inchers. My neighbors are sure enjoying the free fish lately!!

The ice depth in my area today measured around 11 inches. Hunters Point has been working on plowing some lake roads the last few days. George is hoping to expose the ice in the plowed roadways allowing them to freeze better without the snow cover we have on the ice.

Please check with the resort prior to your trip and make sure of the current ice conditions. The fish are bitting!!! on the mud and in the rocks during the early evening hours!!! Come on up and catch a meal of fish!!

  1. Bob, do you know if Fishers is accessible by ATV yet. I am planning a trip on the 29th and am trying to figure out where I can and cannot get to. I’m kind of excited, ya think. Thanks, nice fish.

  2. This is what was posted on their website!!!

I talked with Greg & Dean and they are in that 8″ to 10″ range with the ice out about a couple of miles then there is some inconsistency where you may have 12″ in one spot and 6″ in another out near the flats. Also slushy in areas. Dean has been picking up some nice fish along with a few Jumbo Perch. Dean also mentioned to me that the walleyes are full of small perch. So there is plenty of food for the walleyes. ATV & Snowmobile traffic only at this time. Call Dean, Greg or Suzie for more details and reservations

  3. Thats a good question……everyone is fishing the lake in portables and most are off the lake by dark!!! Hunters Point Resort plans on having some rentals out for the weekend!!! We will know more of the overnite bite than.

  4. Thank you for the report. My son and I want to make a long weekend of it the first weekend in Jan. Sounds like you guys are getting close to driveable ice. With the warmer temps this week and it sounds like there is some slush on top so I want to make sure we can drive on the ice especially with a nine year old.
