September is upon us, we have lake temperatures above 70 degrees and we’re fishing in tee shirts? Whats wrong with this picture?
The fall crankbait bite is normally starting here on Mille Lacs. The September full moon is the start to fall crankbait fishing for me. Yet we continue to experience unseasonably warmer weather for this time of year. The lake appeared to be headed down-ward in temperature last week, but last night it was back up to above 74 deg’s.
I have managed a few walleye during both the early morning hours and just after dark. Last Saturday morning I caught this 23in. walleye on a #13 floating rapala orange/gold colored. I rigged this floater behind a 3/8oz split shot out 100 feet trolling along at 1.5 mph.in 12 feet of water. I have had some success trolling minnow baits and also shad raps with not anyone burning up the net!
I have caught fish on firetiger #5 shadraps, #5 craw color jointed shadraps, Rattlin’Rogues in the blk/sliver color not anyone doing much better than the other? This 19 in. walleye on the right was caught on a blk/sliver rattlin’rouge trolled in 14 feet of water.
The perch have been active this September. Reports are coming in of limits caught in the Agate Bay area near Seventeen Creek. These perch are being caught with slip bobbers and small crappie minnows in 6 feet of water. If the daytime walleye are’nt going for you, maybe give the perch a try!
The smallies are still another option. James has reported that they are going nut’s on top water right now!
This is the time of year that Mille Lacs gives you all the options: walleye, muskies, perch and don’t forget the smallmouth!
