The fishing on the mud has been pretty good for this angler so far this early ice season. The bright sunny days have been the best!! Until today? In the past whenever the sun was out the fish became active biters. Today on the other hand we struggled to catch fish. The sun was out as bright as ever today and the fishing was slow.
I have found active fish on top of the flat in the middle of the day when the sun has been out. Jigging 1/8 and 1/4oz. go-devils have been the ticket. Orange/yellow colors have been good. Today the gold color was catching a few fish. So you have to be prepared to change up finding the color or bait that will put some fish on the ice. This picture of Tom Fellegy with a 26 incher caught on a gold angle eye just off the flat.
The snow on the lake has settled some with the warmer temperatures. The ice depth has not improved over the last few day though. We are seeing around 11-12 inches of ice on the flats that I have fished. The structures near shore have the most variablity in having any where from as little as 4 inches up to 10 inches reported. The areas near shore have a greater snow pack. The cracks that are on the lake have some flooding. You do need to be carefull while crossing them with a sled or atv. Today I ran into a number of areas that had flooding on top of the ice due to the weight of the snow cover.
If you are planning a trip up to Mille Lacs. Please check with the resort before you venture out on the lake and get the most current ice conditions.
Good luck and catch some fish!!!
Who is the burley looking guy in the red??
Wish I could get up there to fish with you one time Bob. Keep the reports coming, helps keep me semi-sane.
Great report Bobber! Looks like an action packed day!
Nice report Bobber! Good to see that your getting into some fish on the mud!
I am planning to come up there during the first week of January. What depths are you catching the fish on and what time of day are you targeting? Great report. Really gets a guy pumped up. Keep em coming
Looks like some tullibee in the photo?? If so, that’s good sign for things to come in the future.
Yes, we caught afew tullibee today!!! good sign is right….
I have fished off the break just into the deeper water 29-30 fow and up on top of the flat in 23-25 fow. You really have to use your electronics to locate the fish!! It really pays to have good equipment

ya kooty, that is me. looking forward to seeing you up here sometime after the big day, when ever that will be.
if anybody is on the fence about booking a trip with “bobber” bob, give him a call. he is on some nice eater size fish and a few pole benders to boot. bob has top of the line equipment, and will show you how and where to use it. it will be money well spent for a very good learning experience on the ice. thanks anaig bob for a fun day of fishing……………….tom fellegy
