Pool 8 Gills 12/15/07

I was walking on the ice at 6:40am this morning with Friends Dave and Bone Mover. We walk out on the ice in a missing man formation. Both Mike C and Blue Fleck had good intentions of being there but both had last minute emergency to deal with. Sounds like things worked out for both fallen comrades today

Things worked out well on the ice also, at a temperature of 5 degrees the three of us split up and drilled holes looking for crappies in deep water. After a half hour of that Bone Mover dropped his camera down the hole to see nothing but shad, that makes it time to move.

We hit another deep area looking for crappies again, after the same results we started targeting shallower water and Dave made the right move and had us on gills. It felt good to close up shop and go to work on some nice looking grub eaters The producer early for me was a Red Glow Diamond jig tipped with either a waxie or Red Wedgee. Changing back and forth between the two baits kept the gills from getting conditioned too one bait and ignoring it. Later in the day the preferred colors changed, an Orange Moxi jig and a Froggie Diamond jig tipped with a waxie kept things on a good roll for me.

The main key to this day was presentation! You had to drum these gills hard. Fishing in 5fow along a weed edge with the jig 1 -2 feet off bottom and jumping not twitching, was a must to call decent sized fish in. Once a target showed up on the LX-5, the work really began. If you would stop moving your bait the fish would turn and say good bye, keeping the bait on the move is what it took to trigger a bite. Most gills where running 6-8 inches with some nice 8- 9 inch gills caught. My biggest of the day tapped at 10 inches.

Cade and Justin stopped by but didn’t stay long, good to see you guys. Also around 2ish, Mr. Koonce and Gary Wellman join in on the action. I was great seeing you both and hope the trip was worth it.

The crisp air felt good on the walk off the ice at 3:00. The ice is in good condition and the snow on top is getting hard making it easier to drag the shack around. Don’t sit in one area to long without a bite either, today it took 3 of us 3 moves splitting up before finding a good bite.

Good luck on the ice people

  1. Great report Bret, wish I could have made it out with you guy today, but family had other plans. I hope to meet up with you tomorrow.

I had a chance to fish with a Good freind that doesn’t get out a lot, so I decided to spend the afternoon with Paul. Thanks to Mike Berger, we were able to get into a few keepers. The bite was a little slow and we had to do a lot of sorting, but anytime on the ice with a freind is a great time. Thanks Mike for the assist on the location. Bret, I hope to see you tomorrow.

  2. Looks like it was worth it for you guys to stay put! We were having a terrible time in that area, guess we needed to be a little more patient. We did catch a few pretty nice gills, but we had to work through a pile of little “x-ray” gills..

here is a picture of a THICK 9″ gill that fell victim to a gill pill. We measured it and it just hit 9. I’d love to see a 10 with the girth that this thing had

and Bret, that 10 is a SOW!!

  3. Gotta love them 10 in. gills Awesome report Mr.Clark ,is the first pic the 10″er?
Looks like you had another good camera day too.

  4. Hey Bret !!!

it was good to meet you….We ended up with about 9 real nice gills and the smaller fish were on and off ….

I look forward to meeting up with you again sometime

  5. Dave and Gary…it was great running into you at the landing… It sure is fun meeting people from the site on the ice!!! Teamwork is always the best recipe!!! I look forward to future adventures …

Brett…as always…fun fishing with you and Dave!! My fishing style today was pretty similar to Brett’s. My jigs of choice were to switch back and forth between a red diamond and an orange/yellow gill pill!!! Like Brett said, one jig would work for me for 3-5 fish…it would slow a little and I would switch to the other…WHAMMY… …another fish on… I believe I reached one hundred gills today…arm was getting sore setting the hook so many times… j/k Lots of action was needed on the jig, move until you find them, and keep throwing jigs at them until something works…

  6. Great report Bret. I appreciate the “missing man” formation on the way out. It’s comforting to know when you’re missed.

Missing a day on the ice – – – – I HATE THAT WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!!
