Had a fun day on the ice today with my buddies Ron (RHW) and Tom (CT). We were in search of some slab crappies, but the bluegills had other ideas. Those gills were biting like crazy and we just couldn’t leave them alone. We had to catch a few hundred with about a third of them being nice size.
The weather was very nice and there was no need to be inside of the portables. We just sat out on our buckets and enjoyed the day. The sun even came out once the front passed through. The ice was about 7-8 inches with a couple inches of snow on top. There was no unsafe ice to be seen where we were at.
We were fishing in 5-8 FOW. The gills were using most of the water column and were caught at almost every level, but the majority were found in the bottom 2 ft. Ratso’s, Diamond Jigs, small plastics like Nuggies, and the new Gill Pill all caught fish. Tipping with a red spike was a good idea when the action slowed.
Sure was a great day to be out on the ice! We got a couple meals of great tasting fish and us older guys got to act pretty young again telling tall tales of years gone by. We laughed so much that I’m sure our stomachs will be sore tonight! Thanks guys for a fun day! Hope you get to go fishing real soon!
Man! I gotta get down there with the kids and give those gills a try!

Great job of hunting those up. How was the ice? Any trouble any where? Just makes a guy want to fire up the deep fryer!
The ice was about 6-8 inches. Seemed to be in good shape where we went.
When is the fish fry? Great report! AND, I love the hat!!
Nice Gills! Thanks Mike!
