Mississippi River, WI – Pool 10

Wingdams and rattletraps!

I went out with handlining in mind but after I saw all the minnow action on the wing dams and not much going on the handline I tied on a chrome and blue rattle trap and had some great action.

The minnow spray was right on or in front of the top of the wing dams today.I caught several large mouth bass , small mouth bass and stripers. The bass were so agressive I even caught a double, one large mouth and one small mouth on the same crank bait at the same time, and here is the picture to prove it.

I caught several fish all day long. No huge fish but the action was almost non stop. The stripers were on the tear too. Here is a picture of a 14inch striper that just hammered my 1/2 oz rattle trap.

I tried using some plastics thinking this would be a good time to test out some of the B fish N Tackle plastics and the action was not as fast. I tied on a black and purple chunky butt tube with a black 1/4 oz H20 jig.I anchored up above the wing dam , just far enough so when I pitched my offering it would float down to , and up and over the wing dam. After several casts, thinking about giving it up and WHAM This smallie did several tail dances, a couple of nice dives and then up to the boat for a picture.

I did work some jigs and crawlers off the end of some wing dams.I got into some of the back sloughs and worked the live bait too and really never came up with much more than a half dozen short walleyes and saugers…But with the water temp. dropping the action is going to pick up. All we need is for Tucks rain dance to work.

  1. I have a hard enough time keeping one bass hooked up on a trap and you landed two at once! I can honestly say I’ve never done that before. Cool pic ecnook.

  2. The first little guy hit it and I was playing him, and then he decided to take a BIG run…then when they came up along side the boat I realized why the BIG run. So then I had to scramble for the camera, hoping they would stay on for a picture and they did !!

  3. lol !! I never forget my camera but I do forget my hat from time to time !!I do have a full head of hair so I like to show it as much as I can

  4. Great job on the double buddy! What next? A triple on #13 Rapala’s? Nice to see the Rattletrap producing! It was my “go to” action lure over the In-Depth/ARM events!
