You would not think the smallmouth would be biting that well this time of the year, but when you are in the boat with John Stears for late fall smallmouth, he will definantly change your mind. John and I had a blast catching many nice fat football size smallmouth bass.
The technique is slow and if you are a run and gun fisherman you might want to slow down a bit. Our technique consisted of practically hopping tubes over the top of wingdams very slowly. We fished these tube baits two different ways: we Texas rigged them and also used a exposed tube jig hook. Both ways caught many fish, so we really did not have one that was better than the other. The tips of wingdams seem to be the ticket. These fish are consistently moving up and down throughout the day, so checking a spot a few times a day can definantly payoff.
One thing that John mentioned in the video that is important is to release these fish where you catch them, just for the simple reason that if you take the fish back to the landing to take pictures, these fish will consume a lot of saved energy that would have been used for their wintering season. It was a great day on the water with John and if anyone is looking for an awesome guided bass fishing trip, definantly get a hold of him.
