Springfield Marsh Bass

I had a chance this past Saturday to spend a few hours with my good friend and owner of Tyndall Motors, Tom Logue. Tom has sponsored me since 1999 and is one of the best bass fisherman in the Midwest, competing for years in various B.A.S.S., local, regional, and national events.

Tom has nailed down a very good fall bite for largemouth that are leaving the shallow reeds because of falling water temps and starting to associate with deep water and current. Pitching sweet beavers and paca craws was the flavor of the day. The fish hit right on the drop or as you hopped back your texas-rigged plastics. Many times the fish ran right at us under the boat and hook-setting was difficult, many fish were on for just a brief time. It was definitely "hand to fish" combat!

Tom is a master of running his 929 Nitro in this marsh, for many people like myself it’s a bit overwhelming at times trying to understand the current, the fish positioning and the seasonal elements at play. There’s also a lot of risk of running aground or even getting lost in the heavier vegetated areas if you don’t pay attention or have a GPS. Occasionally a way in becomes a trap due to falling water. It’s a pleasure for a walleye guy like myself (I grew up bass fishing primarily) to get to spend a day with someone who has the fishing and boat manuevering ability Tom has.

It was a wonderful afternoon, unless you were a duck hunter. I can’t thank Tom enough and most people don’t realize, even locals, don’t realize this fishery exists especially for largemouth. I was amazed at the numbers and size of fish (2.5 -4#) we caught, I never would have believed it with fishing with Tom. He was disappointed we didn’t get any 5’s but they’re there! Please protect this resource if you fish here and let those fish go.

  1. Todd, Great report. What a beautiful Fall weekend! Did you guys get into any smallies, or was this exclusively a largemouth area?

  2. Todd,

Great report from an interesting fishery. I was there pre-GPS and found myself aground more than once.

  3. Smallies are pretty much out of the river and in the lake right now – the dam face, rocky points, etc. according to Tom. I have throughout past winters accidentally caught smallies in holes in the river but not regularly.

We didn’t catch any this past Saturday.
