Mississippi River, MN – Pool 5 Backwater Panfish

Just a quick report on the panfish in the Mississippi River backwaters. Although the water temps are still in the 80’s, the crappies and gills are starting to put on the feedbag.

The picture is of me with a nice bluegill and crappie caught in a dead water area with adjacent deep water. The fish are hitting very agressively on small jigs tipped with waxies. You can use the jigs with or without a bobber. If using a bobber, set the hook immediately when it moves. Often times submerged wood is a key element to finding these fish.

Looks like the fall panfish migration into the backwaters has already started. Hope you get a chance to enjoy it!

Good Fishing,

Mike

Been fishing Rochester and the surrounding area for 40+ years. I love all the lakes, rivers, and impoundments around Rochester, as well as pool 4 of the Mississippi.
