Tri County canal flatheads and crappies

My buddy Big Mike and I hit the canal Wednesday night in search of those monster flatheads we all know are in there. Glenn joined us for a bit, but he had to work early Thur, so he didn’t stay long. We set out some baits in likely areas and waited. Our first fish was a channel cat that went about 8lbs, maybe just a bit bigger. But the second fish was this 26 pound beauty of a flathead. Real dark and black, but he was definitely chomping down for winter. He measured 41″ long by 22″ girth. As with all our big flats, he was released afte a brief picture session.

The third fish wasn’t bad either, as he turned out to be an 11 pound flathead. All three fish fell for LIVELY bullheads.

After our flathead fun was done (the sun came up!), I stuck around for some crappie action. Still a little slow, as the water is still around 60 degrees, but it’ll turn on real soon. I caught probably 11 crappies all afternoon, and had to really work for them. I also did a little trolling and got one white bass doing that. The crappies were in 14-22 FOW and all of them came while moving the marabou jigs real slow. I also got three sunfish into the boat that hit some yellow curly tails.

The conditions were real windy, and we had a low of 38 degrees Wed night, but we still hung in and got a few quality fish, which is good. Been a long time coming on that flathead. The flatheads are going to go down pretty soon, but the crappie fishing will only get better as the temp drops.

  1. Good to see your luck on those flatheads finally turned around. Those are some nice looking fish. The fall bite has taken for ever to get to Nebraska this year, but it sounds like it’s picking up all over the state. I haven’t had a chance to get out for several weeks. Between honey do’s, archery deer, duck hunting, and turkey hunting I have negelected my boat a little too much.

Only 12 more days and we’ll be at Mille Lacs.

  2. Nice report and fish again Brian. Nice to see someone finding some cooperative fish. Hopefully this reoccuring weekend storms will quit before we get frozen in.

  3. Way cool! A flathead report.

We’ve been so busy up here with sturgeon, it seems that we’ve turned our backs on the brutes.

    Thanks for sharing Brian!

  4. Great report Brian and thanks for sharing! The dark flatty is a cool looking fish!
