Mille Lacs September full moon

After a great night of fishing Tuesday night with Rob and Calvin it was a no brainier that I was heading back up Wensday to fish the full moon. I jumped in with TBO this night as my boat is still getting revamped for night trolling. We got to Mille Lacs about 7pm to be greeted by rain and lightning. Not good. Took a quick pit stop for about a hour. The weather cleared and off we went. To start out we where wondering if the small thunder storm was going to shut our bite down. About 10 minutes into the 1st trolling run We had the answer with the 1st 26″er coming to the boat.

THis night we set up our trolling run the same as the night before. Running a weed line in 7 to 10′ of water pulling stick baits about 75′ behind the boat. You had to very the line length as the amount of weeds you where going over dictated. A quick raise of the rod tip helped with this also. Keeping these baits moving back and for in the water seemed very important to these walleyes also. Think I spent the entire night with pole in hand pulling those lures forward and dropping them back.

Joe had the hot hand for the night. It was a fun night. We totaled 16 walleyes. All but 2 where 24″s to 26″s. I picked up the first three in short order right away. Joe looked to be slowly sinking in he seat at this point as this was his 1st night trolling trip this year and he still had the skunk in his pocket. This was about to change as after my 4th fish Joe went on a ten fish streak and left me to net fish and scratch my head at my lures. Way to put on a show Joe. Here is a photo of a TBO custom color he did this with. Looks like I need to expand the selection of colored markers I keep in the boat.

This last paragraph is to remind those that are coming up for night trolling to be careful out there. Water temps are now to the point that you are going to be very cold if you go in and not having flotation on will turn a bad situation worse in a hurry. Make sure and where those kill switches while running from spot to spot and let some one know on shore what time you plan on being back in. Other than that the bite is going well and have fun out there.

  1. Nice fish guys! Good safty tips. With the low water this year, you just cannot be too carefull. Rocks that have never been a problem in the past can reach out and bite you this year.

  2. Mike and Joe! I’m heading out tonight for my first run of the fall. Not on Mille Lacs but on Lake Minnewaska by Glenwood. Hopefully I’ll have something to report.
