Mille Lacs Report 8-26-03

With the recent heat spell, the Walleye bite has been slow. Some fish are being caught in the early morning or after dark hours. They are biting on crank baits or leeches and bobbers. Some fish have been found as shallow as 5 feet. Other fish have been biting in the deeper 25-30 foot depths. There looks like we could be heading into some cooler weather, this should trigger the fall patterns and we should see a great fall bite. Perch have been biting on the rocks and sand. Some nice jumbos are being caught on small crank baits or minnows. We should see a great fall bite and probably a great winter bite that we haven’t had in a few years. The Smallmouth bass continue to bite well. Most fish are being caught on sunny days on plastic baits such as the Ringworm(picture at right) from B-fish-N tackle or K-Grubs. Spinnerbaits have also worked well. Pike and muskies are biting in the weeds. It has been on and off with the best bite happening in the morning hours. Bucktails and spoons have been best.
