Mississippi River Pool 3&4 Walleye Report 9-23-07

I had the privilege to fish this weekend with my favorite river rat.

Randy Stevens and I decided to team up for a weekend filled with chasing the wild river whitetails. It is always a fantastic time when we get to team up and go fish for fun.

Saturday morning we decided to start up on Pool 3. We wanted to check out a couple spots. Well about five casts into our first spot bingo a nice 28 inch whitetail makes it to the boat. This fish came on a black buck tail and a minnow out of 15 feet of water.

With the wind picking up we decided to head back to Pool 4 and try our luck.

Well I am glad we did, because the whitetails were on the feed. We were targeting rock shoreline with crank baits and ringworms. This next fish is another nice 28 incher Randy took on a crank. The bite was just as hot as the weather.

The shad are every where in huge numbers. So if you are not seeing them flicking all over the surface you may be in the wrong spots. Most of our fish came from six feet of water and less. In the two days of fishing we boated over 11 awesome fish. This next fish tipped the scale at 10 pounds 8 ounces. She fell pray to a fire tiger crank bait

This next photo is of a pair of sisters that wanted to get onto the website. All my fish except one came on cranks this weekend. It was a great weekend with some fantastic company and many memories that will live on. I think that our best 4 fish on both days would have went over 25 pounds. I think that we actually caught over 70 pounds of walleye. All fish were photoed and released to be caught another day.

Thanks Randy for sharing your boat with me. As always we shared some giggles.

Sean and Casey Happy Honey Moon.

Hope to see you on the water.

Dean sorry I missed you this weekend see you next time.

  1. Here are a couple more pics from the weekend.
Good luck out there and let the big ones go so they can grow. This is a great fishery and CPR works.

  2. Wow, those fish you guys are catching are awesome!
That truly is an unbelievably good walleye fishery.

Nice job! What a great day on the water.

    Boog

  3. Nice fish Greg. You and Randy can sure find the bigguns. If this is any indication of what the Fall bite is going to be like then maybe even a smuck like me might be able to stick one or two this Fall. Between new grandkids and the wife getting ready to have surgery it will be a week or two before I am on the water but I have the itch bad. Thanks for the great report!

  4. Thanks guys!
That horse shoe is planted deeper than I thought.

Chris yes the wind plays a part in the bite,it seems to push the bait fish into the zones.

Hey Matt saw your Dad the other day at work hope to see you guys on the water soon.

Micah I am casting crank baits to rip rap and to points, also some sand edges that meet rock. Most of the fish are coming out of water six feet or less. We did get one out of 15 feet this weekend but that was the deepest fish.

Good luck have fun and let the big girls go.
Hope to see you on the water.

  5. Very impressive fish. I’m planning on spending time on the water Thursday and Friday of this week. Any particular colors or styles of crankbaits that they were favoring?

  6. Hey Jeff been using shadraps 5 and 7 if I had to pick one color it would be fire tiger. But I have been swapping up different colors Blue,Crawdad,Clown,Black.

Yes Steve you had to have been here it was a hoot. Fishing with Randy is always a blast.

Hey Brian hope to see you this next weekend..It was good to see the newly weds. Sean is chasing your record.

    Take care.

  7. Nice report Vandy. I just might have to take a day off of bow hunting and make my way down. That is as long as I can still get to the spot if there isnt to many boats there

Mayber see ya this weekend or next
