Mississippi River Pool 7 Smallmouth Bass Report

Feel free to insert your favorite cliche here.

‘When World’s Collide’

‘Hell Has Frozen Over’

Whatever it is, I’ll bet it can best describe what took place on Sunday.

If you felt the ground beneath your feet shake and the world paused for just a mintue, it’s because of this report. Actually it’s more likely due to what happened on the river Sunday morning. This report is just the “after shocks” of the day’s events.

What might you ask could cause such a ruckus? How about me “The Bass Guy” spending a day on the water with the “Catfish Guru” Bret Clark. Not only that, but Bret catching multiple Smallmouth on topwater baits…..AND HAVING FUN DOING IT!!!

Just check out the smile on Bret’s face after boating this 19"+ Smallie on a Rapala SkitterWalk. This fish put on a fantastic aerobatic show while putting Bret’s fishing tackle to the test.

Bret and I had an incredible day on the water catching many fish like that on topwater. Spooks, Chug Bugs(as always ), Skitterwalks were the baits of choice for the day.

In my eyes there’s nothing that matches the fun of catching BIG smallies on topwater. Especially when they hit like freight train and pull like one too.

If you are looking for a great time, now is it. The fish are stacked up and have eatin’ on their mind.

If you are familiar with my reports from previous years, you know that this is the time of the year I like to break out the 1/8-1/4oz

Jimmy D River Bugs , with white being the predominant color. I love those things. When all else fails, those baits rise to the top and put fish in my boat. I can’t say enough good things about them. It’s hard to argue with the results. That’s a River Bug hanging out of the mouth of that Smallie in the second pic.

I like to switch over to the River Bugs once the topwater bite has subsided. It’s almost a guarantee, after catching a pile of Smallies, that I can get a few more to stretch my line.

I want to personally thank Bret for spending the day on the water with me. Hopefully I’ve convinced Bret to visit the “Dark Side” of Bassin’ more than once a year.

Thanks Bret, let’s do that again SOON!!

  1. Those sure are some brutes Tom! Congrats on a fantastic report. Gives me the itch to get down there and hop in with you.

What sized Riverbug have you been having most of your luck on? Is white your favorite color for this time of year?

Where is the the jumping catfish???

Bret wouldn’t lower himself to holding it after he caught those Smallies. I even had to take it off the Rat-L-Trap for him.

Never underestimate the power of the Force.

  3. That’s awesome!
By looking close at those river bugs it’s easy to see how those are deadly. I was actually going to post a few pics of the smallies I had yesterday but after seeing the reports by Tom and Steve D it kind of humbles a guy if you know what I mean.
Bret, didn’t it kill the action on those nice jigs when you hung a big ol chunk of cut bait from it?

Actually I have a favorite new bait for channel cats

Tom gave me one of the best clinics I have ever been through for Smallies
I was along for the ride and after he boated 3 to my none, (whats bass tackle look like) he told me what to throw on.
Sorry about the rock character I added to your one plug Mr. Fleck
Next time I will have my own gear after making some mental notes looking at some of your tackle and listening to what you like to throw, I have a plano box marked Smallies already

What’s that honey…..no I said piano not plano….geez that was close

Anyways, I will be trying it out more than once a year without a doubt

Thanks a ton for the tour, lessons and a great time on the water Sir

    Bret

PS: I apologize for all my slamming of bass statements……well somewhat anywho

  5. Nice report Blue!

Its really, really hard to believe that the beauties you and Bret caught actually had to take 2nd fiddle to somebody elses smallie report.
Just the same, those are some really nice fish and I would be doing back flips if it were me who just caught a couple smallies that big.

    Congrats Guys!

This is Obee Won Kenobeecatfish/walleye – Bret, don’t go to the dark side, feel the power of the walleye within you, you have the power to overcome this, your Berkely Lightening rod is your saber, you must not go to the “dark” side, remember the words of CatfishYoda for your strength.

Ok, great report Blue, you have at least shown one thing, Bret can still be taught something. Sounds like it was a great day on the river.

I typically throw 1/8 and 1/4oz River Bugs. I have 4-5 colors tied, but mostly throw white or black this time of the year. The other colors I have are Grey w/ Red mylar, Black over Yellow and some Pumpkinseed w/ green mylar.
