I couldn’t resist another try at some big Fall smallies…so when my buddy Herb called I packed a couple of rods and a box of tube jigs and headed for another large inland lake close to home. We followed the same basic pattern of looking for active fish on deeper structure or schools of baifish. Herb soon set the hook on this beauty and the fight was on!
I felt a crushing hit on my tube and line screamed off my reel…I am using a 6’8″ Legend Elite MXF with 8# PP running line and a 10# flouro leader…to my dismay a huge 23″ class Smallie somersaults out of the water and…THROWS MY JIG!!! Aaargh!!! We didn’t drift far when I got another good “thump” and landed this beauty…
The wind died a little and clouds rolled in…Herb Samme’ is an extrordinary guy. He purely loves fishing and living in the Northwoods. He and spouse Bobbie lost their young son Eric in Iraq a little over a year ago. I feel their loss and admire how they both handle the situation. While the fishing is therapy for Herb it certainly rubs off on those he shares his trips with…We watched an eagle soar nearby but Herb was jolted from his thoughts by another solid hit!
I didn’t have my camera along but Herb’s Razor cell phone did a pretty nice job of recording our CPR Smallies…Here is Herb with another jumbo Smallie on his favorite a 4.5″ Venom Salty Tube…Green/Chartreuse…Sorry Herb the “rookie” phone camera man cut your head off!
The day was gorgeous…the fish, though not numerous were of great quality and fought like demons!
I am probably going to give the bow and shotgun a break for awhile and hit the fall Smallie bite a few more times…How about you?
We did catch a few more fish…these actually were the first Smallies we caught under 18″ in both trips so far. I am told that during the summer on these popular (high recreational activities)lakes there are few large Bass caught…Hmmmmm
Man Tom I wish I had the time to make that trip, just too busy to do that. It looks like great smallie fishing right now. It looks like Herb is knocking the heck out of them too.
You get up here and I’ll take you Dan! I am hoping to get over your way for some hunting soon!
Some nice bronzies Tom.
