Pool 11 9-16-07

Finally! I got out to pool 11 below the Guttenberg dam with my buddies on Sunday. We knew the water temp was on the fall and the fish would have to be close behind with a good bite.

We started out on the first couple wing dams down from the dam pitching everything we could. Cranks, ringies, blades, etc. and we did get some nice largemouth like the one above along with some sheeps. By about 11am we began talking about other options and then…

The fish really started to get on the chew. We were catching all species of fish on plastics and on one eyes (slabs). Even gills, giant gills, were slamming the one eyes. We ended up catching 9 species of fish on the day. Most of them on one eyes but many fish were caught on natural to dark blue colored ringies.

At about 3 o’clock we headed up to the fast water at the dam and tried for some eyes. We had attempted this first thing in the morning but to no avail. This time we were rewarded with a bunch of nice 20-22″ eyes that were slamming ringies in the fast water. Trevor also got a nice September sauger in the mix with the walleyes.

Everyone I’m talking to has had some good success with the recent cold snap so get your gear ready and hit it up while it lasts.

  1. Nice report and fish Andy! My boys and I have been getting big bulls farther south on 11 too. September is a great multi species month.
Glad you found time to get up this way

  2. Thanks guys. With the purchase of a new house I haven’t been out nearly as much as i’d like to but things are getting under control now. i’ve had some decent wading trips on the iowa river but never anyone else with me so no photos.

dean, how’s the bite on p4 shaping up?

  3. I headed out on 11 Friday, the wind made positioning the boat for wingdam fishing a challenge at best. Eventually we more or less gave up on the wingdams after only a couple of bass and then headed over into the Cassville slough where we put the hurtin’ on the bass.

I’d say that in the last couple of hours of fishing we caught between 40 and 50 bass. Size ranged from super-dink to about 2 lbs, but it was good enough that I headed back yesterday with the wife & kids for Whackfest II – Return of Gianni. Average size was much improved yesterday, and some smallies starting to show up in the mix as well.

Most of the fish came on (surprise) a white spinnerbait – those who’ve fished with me know that 90% of my time bass fishing is spent winging a white spinnerbait w/ a willow blade. After working a structure one direction with the spinnerbait, I’d work back down it with a crankbait and pick up about another 1/2 as many fish. At one point, I had a good sized walleye on the crank, but when I tried to hand the rod off to my 5-year old, he was able to shake it.

All of the fish were plumpers. Some looked like they were ready to explode, but continued to hammer the baits.
