Mike C and I were welcomed Saturday early in the a.m. by 53 degrees and a nice North breeze at the boat landing. We were anticipating a good bite still going on but had no idea it was going to be as good as it was for us Crappies, Bluegills, Perch, Pike, Bass and Channel Cats were all caught on this outing. The motor was fired up, goose pimples were on my arms, and the boat was headed straight for a wood pile to play with the Crappies for starters.
There was no disappointment with the Crappie bite. Fish after fish were being boated in 14fow out of a wood pile. The Crappies were suspended anywhere from 4-10 feet and they were averaging in size from 9-11inches. Mike C was doing alright with a minnow hanging below a bobber on a pink and white jig but the Mini-Mite I was pitching was tearing things up. The trick was to pitch the Mini-Mite at the wood and just let it drop keeping an eye on the line, as soon as there was a pause, twitch or motion side ways the hook was set. Pitching the little plastics made for a fun way to tag some nice Crappies.
After getting our fill of the specs we wanted to try our hand at some perch after hearing from AmWatson the perch were hitting for the Bass guys. We headed into a Basin that is fed through a couple of cuts off the main Channel. We started drifting weed edges and the deeper water with Mini-Mite’s and minnows looking for a bite. Mike picked up the first perch and the anchor was dropped over the side of the boat. The perch were relating to a transition line off a sand point that turns into muck and yet not far off a weed edge. They were in 8-10fow and Mike had the hot stick this time using a 1/8oz Perch Go Devil Jigging Spoon from B Fish N Tackle tipped with a minnow head. The average perch being caught were 8-10.5 inches long. There was some nice perch that did find there way home with us
We did spend some time casting for pike and picked up a few. A Dare Devil weed less spoon produced the best while casting. Nothing big but we had some fun with the snot rockets. Mike caught some bass also throwing the old reliable Jitter Bug at lily pads. After playing with the predators we headed back out to the main channel to kick back and enjoy a few of the sites while drifting the channel edge for Channel Cats, they were wanting to play tug of war with us also. The Channel Cats came out of 20-25fow and were pounding a cut gill. They were not messing around on this trip and you had better of had a good hold on your fishing rod
It was an awesome day on the water fishing with my buddy Mike and catching a variety of species. And to think, things should only be getting better with the cooling temps.
Good luck on the water people.
Bret
Nice fish Bret! And here I thought you just had big channels down there!
Did someone say Channels
Mike C with a nice one for the day!
Another and then I will stop
One of the best days we’ve had on the river Buddy Bret.
Bret forgot to mention the snot rocket that hit his crappie he was pulling in on his ultra light. That thing was hanging on so tight we thought we were actually going to get to net him but when he looked up and saw those two ugly mugs trying to get him into the boat he let go and high tailed it out of there. That river is rocking right now with fish constantly busting the surface on a feeding frenzy.
Awesome Day and Great Report Bret
My friend troy and I will be out today to see if we can match your success bret. I doubt we will but i’m sure we’ll have fun. Nice fish….
