Thursday evening prior to the rain, the channel cats were on a tear. It was consistent action from start to finish. Last night however our numbers were very disappointing. What a difference a day makes! Although Ryan Bielat (aka Ralf Wiggum) and his wife Mrs. Wiggum made up for the slow night with this 58.5″ Lake Sturgeon!
Like so often with Lake Sturgeon, Ryan felt that tap…tap…tap and started reeling to engage the circle hook. Because the fish allowed herself to be led to the boat, it feels like a small fish at first. Once to the boat…she started to get a bit heavier.
I asked Ryan to “twang” the line to see if the story was true that this would make them jump…Well, we got a reaction, she didn’t like that one bit and for the next few minutes all I heard was the line burning out of the guides.
Mrs Wiggum was trying not to be out done. She’s picture here with the lightest cat of the night… a three pounder.
Let’ go back to the start of the night first…While I was baiting up the rods, I heard this “ewee” and looked over to see that a high flying bird had just “dropped” Ryan a little gift on his head. Some of the “spatter” made it to his wifes arm. As they were toweling off, I was wondering “is this a sign??”
Although shad has been the preferred bait, last night there was a preference for my secret bait. We had the smaller channel come in on fillet sucker.
The secret bait will be reviled in the Cat/Sturgeon Forum later today.
Here’s Mrs. Wiggum with her 8 pound channel!
With the water temps starting to drop, the fishing continually will be getting better.
See you on the water!
Thanks again, Brian! One correction–she’s not Mrs. Wiggum till May.
I think it’s close enough to call Steph, Mrs… from the looks of things last night.
Congrats on the big guy. Sure wish we could have stuck a big channel for you and the contest….next time!
Reviled or revealed? Big difference!
Not yet Brian…Ryan is doing the right thing by testing the waters with some Sturgeon fishing first….if she likes it, I bet he keeps her.
Ryan, nice catch and an awesome sturgeon too!
Jon
LOL, it was her choice to go sturgeon fishing!
Nice report Brian. Are those the new fancy PDFs they are wearing? They look sharp if they are.
Thanks, Bill
Those are the Float-Tech 3 in 1 PFD’s Bill.
They can be worn with the nylon outer shell that’s rain proof, breathable and warm for it’s size. The arms zip off to become a vest and lastly, the bladder can be worn by itself.
Perfect for the warm evenings that turn into cold nights on the river!
Check them out at http://www.floattech.com
Beats falling in the water with your PFD on the back of your chair!
It’s hard to tell which is bigger, the fish or the smiles.
