What great weather we’re having for evening and night fishing here in the Redwing, MN area! With the temps staying in the high 70’s, even the fair weather fisherman, my Favorite Wife and her brother spent a few dark hours in my boat Sunday night.
The action of the evening was when the Favorite Wife hooked into this 13.75 channel. During the longer then normal fight, she kept saying that “I can’t do this any more”. I reminded her that the last time she said that, it was 27 years ago when she was in labor with the Favorite Daughter. (She didn’t see the humor in my comment)
The following night, I found myself on the St Croix River fishing off of IDA Field Staffer Steve DeMars front porch. He wouldn’t let me take a photo of him and his sheepshead.
Last night, I had the pleasure of searching for some channel cats on Pool 4 with Jarrett (aka StCroixer) of toBsold on line auctions<<<.
The wind was being blocked by a bend in the river and it was a perfect evening for wearing the light weight vests of Float-Tech<<< personal flotation devices.
My secret bait hasn’t been doing real well just lately and tonight was no exception. So we had three rods soaking 2 to 3 inch shad on the bottom.
Jarrett’s first channel came it at around 2 to 3 pounds and she was a scrappy one!
The big fish of the evening did have whiskers but wasn’t a catfish!
Jarrett was fishing straight down beside the boat and holding on to his rod when he said…”GOT ONE!” After a few seconds of reeling the fish up Jarrett made the observation that it wasn’t a channel and the fish didn’t even know it was hooked yet.
He called that correctly, because in a few second the 80 pound Power Pro was peeling off the reel and down the guides of the St Croix Premier rod like it was a snoopy pole.
It’s always fun to be the net man when I have to struggle to get the fish in the net…because my oversize net is on the verge of being too small!
We boated Jarrett’s new personal best Lake Sturgeon, taped her at 53.5 inchs and the weight came in at 32 pounds. I noticed that this fish put a 53.5 inch smile on Jarrett’s face too.
With the higher flow the channel cat action on the upper end of Pool 4 has been very very good with some big guys coming in. The fall flathead bite hasn’t really started yet, but there has been some reports of some nice ones being caught and released on suckers in the deeper holes. I expect this to get better as the water starts to cool.
If you haven’t launched out of Everts Fishing Resort<<< yet, stop in and talk with Dean about the current bite. Not only cats but I hear there’s a few people that fish walleye down there too. Dean will give you the latest scoop on what’s going on.
In fact, if you’ve never been there before… you can launch for free the first time…just tell Dean the secret IDA password…”peanut butter cookies”.
PS it helps to bring some along too.
Looks like Steve has the best seat in the house!
Great report Brian, I’m sure that sturgeon was a pleasant surprise
Mr.Catfish : The gift that just keeps giving
Thanks again Brian for my new Personal Best,
One question though, what’s next?
First it was “Secret Bait”, then “Twang” your line (“you’ve got to do it more than once” he said, like I was goofy), then I turned around and got this pic, I don’t know what was going on, but it sure did look like he was playing this little guy like a flute
Clearly, all your “unique” tricks are working
“He wouldn’t let me take a photo of him and his sheepshead.”
Steve, BK wouldn’t let me take a photo of him and ANY of his sheepsheadS.
Good report Brian, sounds like you been having some fun lately.Jarret..thats a dandy
Great report BK! Looks like you are playing a Sturgeon Flute!
