With gas as expensive as it has been lately, a person needs to go no further than the extended twin cities area to find phenomenal fishing. It\’s been a while since I have been out, and even longer since I have had anything worth posting about so we\’ll start out east on Demontreville for big time summer largemouth.
We targeted shallower water for these two big girls and found them on the outside edge of a lot of milfoil, weeds, and algae that had built up along shore right at the first sign of weeds that grew to the surface. The weeds on the surface provided a nice stopper for everything the wind had blown in the day before and the bass were right on the edge of this muck waiting for a tasty morsel. All of our quality fish came on Lake Fork\’s craw tubes that just stink of garlic and salt. As soon as the tube hit the water, if it was in the prime time, these bass just inhaled them. Unfortunately for me, I was the camera man on Friday, but here\’s my brother with a couple of dandies.
This morning it was out to the west and Lake Minnetonka and my neighbor Joe. This my second time out with Joe and he\’s got a milk run of spots on the south west corner that is second to none and he\’s a great guy to boot. We targeted mid lake humps with submergent weeds, milfoil points that come out from the larger flat of weeds, rock to weed shoreline transitions, and the money spot which was an very peculiar outside turn of a weedline that juts out into the main lake.
Our bait of choice was the ever famous cow girl. I\’m not one to jump on a band wagon unless the wagon is worth jumping on and as far as I can tell…this one is hoppin! The double bladed soup ladels they have attached to these things give off a lot of \"thump\" combined with the tinsel which comes alive in the water and you have a pretty sweet bucktail. Here\’s Joe with a solid 47 incher caught at about 8.15 this morning. Tips here would be, there seems to be a window where fish are showing up and it\’s not until after 8 until about noon, so hit your money spots during this window. Also, all of Joe\’s recent fish have come boatside so make sure you are finishing every cast and throwing the figure 8 or circle in because they are taking baits on the turn or when it speeds up.
Great report Micah. That is one heck of a muskie.
I ve got a decent little muskie lake just a bike ride away from my house. I guess I should buy a couple of those cow girls.
