Aug 26 Clear Lake Ia yellows and more

I went to the lake Sat and caught a few fish but learned alot.So I returned on Sunday and had 4hrs of decent fishing.I did not catch many of my target fish walleyes but a variety of panfish and a couple walleyes made for a good outing.

I got on the water about 9am and I wish I would have got there sooner as the first couple hours were fantastic.I trolled the west end of lake in 11 to 12ft with #5 jointed shad raps in chart/black.I trolled at 2.5mph and tried to keep plugs just inches off bottom. When I did things right I was rewarded with some nice yellows.Alot of the yellows were monsters as far as yellows go.

Iwas also rewarded with a variety of other panfish as a 10in crappie found my rap to his liking.I have been hearing of a few others being caught along with a few perch.Could make for a interesting winter.Later in the mourning a nice silver that would go over 2 lbs made for a good battle and a 15 eye a followed shortly.Even though the walleyes were not cooperating I did not have the lack of action and had the makings for a good fish fry.I kept about 20 yellows for a fish fry and released many others.

I noticed alot of other fishermen pursuing the yellows in the more tradional methods bait /jigs and slip bobbers and everyone was catching there share. The fishing should continue to improve going into fall and I would think the ice fishing might be good as well.I got to leave my trolling rods home and catch some of these feisty yellows on light tackle. That sounds like another good reason to go fishing.

  1. I enjoyed reading your report and admire your success. Thought maybe the rain had things goofed up but obviously not. The wife and I were thinking of going up their about Wednesday and now you\’ve got my hopes up. And no I\’m not going up there this weekend. I use to live there, enough said.

  2. No they are a spieces all of there own. They have a lot of simularitys to a white bass but thats all.I will add they they are terriffic table fare as they do not have the mud streak thats found in the silvers and there table fare compares to a perch

  3. Good to see you out on the water Joe. We had similar success on Saturday. We also caught 2 catfish that went about 10 pounds each!!! Talk about fun, one wrapped itself up so bad we thought we had the state record muskie on for awhile until it came rolling in. I was also impressed with the number of boats targeting yellows in the traditional style. Catch you later. OUT…..
