July at Roy Lake

HI:

I hope you enjoy the pictures they are from July to this week and the fishing can be challenging but there are fish to be caught. I have to bore you with a little story of taking my 2-year-old “to-be-grandaughter” fishing. I set up my good rod and reel for bobber fishing with a minnow on the hook.

After I set her down on the dock…in a corner….I started worrying that this was going to be the last time I would see that rod and reel unless I wanted to go swimming. So, I thought about how I could secure it and I was coming up with an idea when I looked down and saw that bobber take a deep dive…Maddie you have a fish…..of course, she thought I was a little dizzy (she’s not the first to think that” ) and I helped pull up the line and she had a 1+ lb. Crappie. I hope to have a picture for the next fishing report. She was so excited that she is yelling to the guys in the condo cabin about catching a fish. That was so exciting and I didn’t lose my rod & reel. Not realizing it, but that is what summers are for summer/family recreation with a little bit of everything….even the possibility of catching a nice fish.

Here at Roy Lake we not only have fishing, we also have a swimming, beach, canoe rentals, Frisbee golf, playgrounds including volleyball and horseshoes and great walking trail on the island that leads you by a beaver dam and a great bridge for just relaxing or fishing……..and for great family memories.

Also, I know I have mentioned my guide service but when talking about family time, I have never had a guide who know only is a fantastic fishermen and knows the 48+ lakes in this area like the back of his hand for year-round fishing he is fantastic also for putting little kids onto fishing. I asked one family why they thought Gary “walked on water”. They said not only did they catch fish and enjoy being with Gary (a retired school teacher) but he taught them a lot about the area and he parked the boat underneath an eagle’s nest and they were able to watch mom and dad feed the babies.

I hope you take the time to come here as we are open year round. Most people say when they come here that they found a piece of heaven and it doesn’t matter who you are to feel that way.

We look forward to seeing you some time.

  1. Nuts, I was looking forward to seeing the pound crappie!

If your gonna fish Bass, your not going with me! I am with brian and want to see the 1# crappie!

  3. Those are some nice looking smallies!
I know very little about the lake other than being a good walleye lake?
Does Roy lake have a good population of smallies?

  4. Steve, Roy has no smallies at all!
I grew up in SD and have spent countless hours on that lake. I still have not found a place in MN that rivals it for #’s and size when it comes to smallies. Hard to believe, I know, but the AVERAGE smallie in Roy now is approaching 20″.

BTW, for the record, I was the guy that purchased your donated United Way auction (at work) trip last fall.

    Jack/Slider,
Don’t think you are getting on that lake next spring without me at your side to boot!

  8. First I want to say thank you to the hospitality shown Roy Lake Resort as a new member of IDA. I think this is going to be a lot of fun.

As far as the crappie, check out Dean Marshall’s crappie and other fish caught last week. It was fun and he certainly is a nice person.

  9. You should see the 2+lb crappies I caught off the floating dock several years ago. At Happy Hour every day they would congregate under the floating dock and everyone was catching limits of crappies this size that Fall. They still go to the floating dock but not at happy hour. They must have joined AA. I do have some on the wall. I had ten but they kept getting moved around in the freezer and the taxidermist said he could only save 4 of them. They are so big it doesn’t matter. The crappies in the picture I sent you when I was with Bob Probst were caught last spring on the floating dock at 4:00 A.M. in the morning.
One has to be hyped up sometimes to go fishing that early in the morning.

  10. Will look forward to meeting you guys next spring. We are having some awesome bass fishing now and the walleye bite has been up and down. Pan fishing bite is good but on Roy their size is small. On some of the other lakes they are good eating size.

I am going to send out another fishing report profiling the Sept. fishing last year. It is phenomenal. One wants to be able to explore the other lakes as well.

  11. Bobs got a super nose for finding fish. He can hunt down fish like nobody else. I bet catchin crappies with him was a blast. Tell him that the Walleye Searchers Club in Rochester, Mn says hi. He was kind enough to do a seminar for us and a few years before that he stopped by and did a question & answer nite with us when he was passing through. I have ALOT od admiration for him. Hes a great fisherman.
    Thanks, Bill
