Great Action Drifting for Cats 8/4/07

Pool 8 Channel Cats are hungry and I don’t have a problem feeding them. AmWatson jumped in the boat with me and JPMason was doubled up with his brother Joe, Joe heard that we have been producing nice size Channel Cats, so he wanted to see what it was all about. After tying into this 20lb Channel right at dusk, I would have to say he has got the fever This fish had 2 grown men dancing around in a boat big time, AmWatson and I just sat back and enjoyed the show. Awesome fish Joe

We are not doing anything different than what has been working for the last couple weeks, 24inch mono leader armed with a 1/0 Daiichi Catfish Wide circle hook tied to a 1/0 Barrel swivel then attached to a 1/0 Snap swivel which is tied to the main line. We did however hit an area that we have not drifted yet this year only to find the Channels were still there and willing to play

Instead of following the edge of the channel as we have been doing in other areas, we were dragging the cut baits over a clam bed in 13fow located on an outside bend of the river. With wood around, a good rocky wing dam and some current, just makes areas like this even more inviting to the Cats.

After hand shakes and a couple one liners, AmWatson and I headed off the water around 2 leaving the Mason Bro’s to themselves, can’t wait to hear what we missed out on. When you are hooked on cats it is hard to tear yourself away from the river. The night cooled off and it was a welcomed relief from the heat. The boat traffic died down to null once the sun went down and there was only a ripple on the water from the Southwest breeze. It just doesn’t get any better than that on a Friday night
I had a blast gentlemen!

  1. WOW!!! VERY nice fish guys. You boys sure are having ALOT of fun down there. I can see why Mike wanted to get a jon boat for fishing down there. He can fish about any spieces he wants just like you keep showing everyone how much fun multispieces fishing is Bret. And that night it was VERY nice cats.
    Thanks, Bill

  2. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond people

Steve, you don’t know how much I appreciate you sharing the drifting report with us all last year. I do somethings a little different as in hook size and probably the way I cut my bait but it is the same presentation

It is an easy and a fun way to fish Channel Cats.

Isn’t that the truth In fact, Bret let me catch 2 cats
The most fun was watching Joe fight his big channel cat. Bret and I hung back a little bit and watched the show. JP and Joe were dancing all over the boat as the cat took several long hard runs. Joe’s arms definitely got a workout on that fish. He did a great job considering he had to keep the cat out of the rocks as well as the wood.
It is amazing how hard the channels hit. When I got my second fish, I was half asleep. That fish hit so hard it slapped my rod against the boat and about ripped the rod out of my hand. That is a surefire way to get woke up and get the adrenaline flowing.
All in all, it was a great night with several fish being boated and some good laughs being shared by all

  6. As always, another great time spent on the river with good friends. Brother Joe had his hands full is an under statement. I ended up with a few small channels, but nothing compared to Joe’s.

We ended the night with one more channel at the end of the float. We were off the water by 2:30 AM.

I need to say this again, THANKS Bret . Brother Joe call Uncle Den after he landed the 20# and told him. They are planning to try this down home. You have another couple of guys hooked on catfishing.

I did take my son “Sean” out on Sunday morning and setup in the area we floated Friday night. We anchored and threw cut bait, he ended up with four (4) nice eater for his Grampa. I did not have the camera, but took some photos after we got home, will post later. Nothing better than having a nine year old tie into a catfish. He was grinning ear to ear.

Wats, it was good to see you again.

    Thanks,

    JP
