Mississippi River Lake Pepin Stripe/Bass

My second father offspring trip of the week was Steve & Scott Christenson of Orfordville, WI., however Scott is a Student at the U of W in Madison. The family is vacationing in Lake City so we opted to fish Lake Pepin. Steve admitted he hadn’t fished in 30 years so some casting lessons were in order. Scott is gaining interest in fishing so a few tips on how to improve the casting accuracy and off we went. We started for bass on a stretch of riprap but go sidetracked by diving gulls and a huge school of stripers busting on the surface. They were in open water and not relating to any structure. The school was moving at a fast pace and I suspect we chased em for a mile. It was pandemonium with fish-after-fish and lots of doubles.

After about 45 minutes it was back to the target species against the rocks and scattered weed clumps. The fish were relating to the weeds but away from the beds so the 2.5” Northland Mimic Minnow in Silver Shiner took all of the fish. We presented them with 6”8” medium extra fast St Croix, Avid spinning rods and 8 lb mono.

We caught fish on every spot we stopped on but one. If you found one fish there were plenty near buy. A lot of the fish were in the 12-15” range but we hit one school of Sumo’s. Unfortunately, the biggest one got away.

The key to the hot bite seems to be the 3-4” shad have shown-up everywhere. Keep an eye out for gulls in open water for stripers and fish busting near shore for the bass. It’s a great time to be on Pepin. We all agreed we had a 100 fish morning.
