Rain, Rain, Rain and then even more rain this last weekend but there was still fishing to be done so Sherman it was. The weather may have been less than perfect but the fishing was good and the time spent was PRICELESS.
I got to the lake around 7:00am on Saturday to a steady rain and calm water. The forecast for the day was a "chance" of rain and wind less than 10mph so I thought the shower would pass. So on the frog toggs went and out to the water I went. I had made up my mind that I was going to chase schools of whites around for a while and then do some trolling for ‘eyes’, so I got the marabou jigs and spinning rods out and went on the hunt. After seeing a few schools surface and decend very qiuckly I knew that I was going to have to work for my fish. Since there are SO many small schools of baitfish around that the whites can feed on, they are still in small schools and are scattered everywhere. They are boiling bait for 15 – 30 seconds and then down they go and there are numberous schools doing this at the same time. I was a lot of running around but it was fun and 12 nice keepers and two severely shriveled up hands later I called it a sucessful day.
As much fun as I had on Saturday, Sunday is going to be the day that I remember for a long time. Kelli and Ryder decided to brave the still damp conditions with me and around 10:30am we arrived at the lake. On our way out to a good spot from the day before, we same a party barge that was waving us down so we went to help. Know I couldn’t get their boat started up but we were able to tow them back to the marina so they could get some help there. When we were finally able to start fishing I had the time of my life. Kelli and I got onto our first school of whites right away and just like that we had a couple of really nice keeper size whites in the boat. Little did we know that the whites we caught also doubled as babysiters and Ryder loved them and other than a cat-nap in the middle of the day and a snack he was a dream on the boat. Kelli and I ended up boating around 20 real nice whites on our 1/8th ounce char and white marabou jigs by around 3:00pm and with the shy getting heavy again, we called it a day.
The whites are boiling the top all day long up at Sherman right now and when the baitfish finally get into their large schools, the action should get a little more consistant. We caught fish all weekend long and as long as the wind stays down they are easy to see when they surface. As an added bonus, there was a good push of gulls that arrived Sunday and they are a lot of help when the wind picks up a bit. FYI, if you see a decent sized school of bait on the screen, watch the spot. There were several times when I would see a large school of bait and just sit back and wait. Most of the time it didn’t take long and whites were boiling.
Great report Zach, glad you’re catchin fish!
Looks like a good time Zach. The little guy’s not so little anymore!
Great report Zach. Good to hear the little guy is getting used to spending some time in the boat.
Nice report again Zach.
I heard that they had a MAJOR mayfly hatch at Sherman this weekend; that too should help fatten up some of the fish.
Rumors have the whites to be of a better size this year also,
Good fishin’
jorg
Yea he is get’n BIG fast. From the fishing that I have done up there the last couple of weeks, the whites are schooling by size big time. It also seems to be working out that the bigger fish are working the deeper water and the smaller fish are in the shallows. This is what I have noticed anyway. Also there were a TON of dead mayflies up in the Marina Cove but I didn’t see any anywhere esle.
Nice report Zach I bet the little man had fun!
