Mississippi River Pool 4&3 Walleye Fishing Report

The walleye fishing still remains good on the mighty river. I spent some time on the water Tuesday and Wednesday of this past week so this report is a little delayed. Since my last report I have mixed things up a bit. Trolling cranks, dragging jigs, casting jigs and casting cranks, have all seen some action in my boat.

Tuesday afternoon I shared my boat with Chris Simmons, RedneckJr here on the site. Chris and I started our afternoon fishing cranks. Cranks have been a bit off for me compared to bait but the second walleye pictured here was fooled in to eating a crank. This walleye ended up being my biggest, and my only fish on a crank bait during our outing. It wasn’t long and we put the cranks to rest and started fishing jigs and crawlers. The better action was to be found on the jigs and crawlers. Chris was on fire for quite some time, boating several nice walleyes in the low 20” class with one bigger walleye that is pictured here caught on a jig and crawler. That boy can fish a jig ! Chris and I ended our short outing with 20 legal walleye and the 4 bigger walleye that are pictured here.

Even though crawlers boated almost all of our fish on this outing, we did take 2 fish on crank baits. Chris’s best walleye of the trip came on a crank as well, that fish is pictured above. Nice eye Chris! It was fun sharing my boat with you for a few hours .

On Wednesday, I shared my boat with Glenn Presanall and a coffee drinking buddy of his. Our day was spent fishing cranks and fishing jigs and bait. We hit the water for a little over 4 hours on this day. The bite was much slower on this day than it had been for me on days past but we were still able to boat some decent walleyes and Glenn had learned a few things on fishing the river as well. I am looking forward to setting a up a Fall trip with you if we can make it work Glenn Thanks for spending a day in my boat.

The Walleye fishing on the mighty river is still better than average for this time of year so get out and get fishing!

I’ll see ya’ on the river.

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  3. Hey there Dustin. Nice report. This is Glen wanting to thank you again for all the lessons I learned while spending time in your boat on Wednesday. Me and my buddy both enjoyed our time with you. Looking forward to another outing with you some time this fall. I hope it works out.

  4. Dustin,
Great report and thanks for taking the boy out. He is well on his way to having that jig fishing figured out. The smartest thing I ever did was to put a St. Croix rod in his hands. That really shortens the learning curve for those subtle walleye bites. Heck, it has ever helped out this old fart! Ya gotta love the river, even this time of year there are so many places and techniques that will put nice walleye in the boat.

  5. Glen,

Just wanted to say thanks again. It was a pleasure to share a boat with you two and am looking forward to making a fall trip happen with you

Sorry, I am not to keen on the lake Pepin bite this time of year. Very seldom do I make it down that way until the Fall season. I spend most of my time in the Redwing area.

Put your question in this forum Mississippi River walleye forum and you should get some pointers
