Dragon Jig Wallyeys

I have been out a couple times now with intentions on catching walleyes with the new dragon jig. Tipped with a crawler or a leech these jigs are very effective. Last week I was exploring new waters for me and using a jig I have never fished before. I was looking for some back sloughs with timber and a fair amount of current. I wanted to stick these weedless jigs into some heavy cover to test their ability to be weedless and also catch fish…

With several gills and some walleyes like this one, I am a true believer…With the bow mount (just a bit faster then the current) I was pulling the jigs down stream just into the tips of the downfalls in the back sloughs…Tipped with either a crawler or a leech (more gills on the crawler) I was able to land some nice fish.

Today I was in search of some toothy pike. Pulling jointed grappler shad and rapalas about 2mph I was working sand bottom and current breaks. There are multiple current breaks in this one area and when the water hits upper 70’s to lower 80’s the pike move into feed on the shad.

We did not find the pike like usual but with the big storm that went thru last night I guess it was to be expected…some small pike 24" or so is all we could muster..

But out comes the dragon jig…trolling cranks upstream and the sour apple dragon jig down stream the walleyes were more hungry then the northern pike. Including this 26" walleyes..

  1. Great report Dave. I got to try those jigs out at the GTG last month. They are great. I can’t wait to try them out on a couple of the reservoirs I fish back here. There’s a few areas with some timber on the bottoms where we’ve watched walleyes on the Aqua View and just couldn’t find a presentaion that would work right. I think these dragging jigs should do the trick next spring. Will there be a couple different sizes by then?

  2. Andy,

I did loose a few…This jig is not 100% snag proof. I believe I would have lost a lot more jigs and would have spooked the fish if it wasn’t for the dragon jig.
I think that once you snag up in cover like this, and you start yankin and pulling on the walleyes safe house, they will move out and be spooked..

  3. Thanks Ben,
It’s been a while since my last report. It sure is good to get out

The prototype 1/8 and 1/4 Dragon Jig was sent out this week to have a master mold made. This will need to be approved, masters made and then a production mold made..I sure do hope that both the 1/8 and 1/4 will be ready to go for the upcoming spring..

  4. Nice fish Ecnook, wish I could of made it out with you and Snake. I’ll be interested in those 1/8th once when they arrive, Let me know!!

  5. Dave,
Tried the Sour Apple draggin jigs up in Canada , pitching into small lillypads and had a ball. These jigs are awesome! Especially on an ultralite !
