Mississippi River Pool 3 Report 7-23-07

Since my last report I have only had the chance to hit the river twice. Not much has change for my boat on this body of water. The wing dams are still holding a good number of walleyes. I am still seeing very good numbers of walleye in a days outing with some big mama walleye in the mix

Bait has still proven to out fish cranks for me on the last two trips to the river. The biggest change I have encountered has been the walleyes location. Dams that have produced for me in the last couple of weeks have been void of walleyes for the most part. The flow has dropped quite a bit since my last report and making the needed adjustments to the tips of the deeper dams, and wing dams in the first run of a series has been key for me. Right now you need to find flow! The flow is so slow right now I have been welcoming a North wind just so I can cast a 1/8oz jig off to the side of the boat and have the wind drift my jig across the top of the wing dam .

Precision Jigs in the 3/32 to 1/4oz size have been working the magic for me. Wind speed and direction will dictate jig size on the day you hit the water. Color has been hard to pinpoint with walleye caught on many color offerings on the last couple of outings. I have been using mostly orange/chartreuse and black but others in the boat have seen action on sour apple, purple and just plain lead(silver).

Last Wednesday, Brian Lyons , Randy Stevens and myself hit pool 3 for a fun day on the water. What a fun day it was! The walleye fishing was good for us on this day, as an added bonus, all three of us were fortunate enough to boat our own big mama walleye. Jigs and bait did the damage with very few walleyes caught on crank baits. All in all our day together was a fun one . I would like to thank Brian again for letting Randy and myself ride along in his boat for the day

On Sunday, I shared my boat with Sean and Brian Lyons. Brian was only able to make it a half day but Sean and I made a day of it. The walleye bite was very good again with good numbers of eyes and some bigger walleyes in the mix. Casting jigs tipped with leeches and crawlers was the hot ticket for us again on this day but cranks did make a bit of a showing in the morning hours for us. With the winds 1/4oz jigs worked best.

The heavier the boat traffic, the better the walleye bite has been for me. If you are not fond of being tossed around like a rag doll, an being forced to constantly re-position the boat because of the big cruisers, this bite is not for you:(. I finally found a use for those big cruiser boats that run up and down the river, other than destroying the rivers edge………..they make the wing dam bite better

I will be on the water once this week. After that, I will see a week pass by before I have another chance to fish . That’s all for now!

I’ll see ya on the river!

When not at work I'm busy playing fishing guide on pools 3 and 4 of the Mississippi River.I will fish Lake Pepin but the bite has to be really good on the lake to get me off of moving water.

  1. Awesome fish Dustin!!!

I don’t get to hit the water until Saturday. My river fishing has been limited to trips with the boys so we end up fishing for whatever rather than targeting the walleyes.

    Nice job!!!

  2. Good report Dustin. I never put two and two together but I guess the cruiser wakes did help with the wingdam bite. I know our bite didn’t start getting good till 10ish and that about coincides with the start of the cruiser traffic. Hope to see you on the water in the near future.

Excellent report, are you tipping the jigs with leeches or crawlers?

Both have been effective but if I had to pick one, the crawlers have been a bit better.

Great Report Derek! Thanks for sharing!

Derek????…….Derek??? Derek didn’t write this report!

  5. Dustin,

As I told you when we talked on the water Sunday morning, I really couldn’t get anything going working Dubuque rigs across the wingdams. This technique had been producing well for me the past couple of months but it appears that the fish were on the tops of the wingdams and my baits were at the base. Taking your advice, I switched to pitching 3/16 jigs tipped with leeches to the tops of the wingdams and it was about a fish every other cast for over an hour. Most of the fish were decent sized sheepies and small smallies with an occasional walleye in the mix. I know sheepies don’t get much respect but I think they’re a blast to catch when they’re smacking those jigs.

    Thanks,

    Boone

  6. Awesome report Dustin!
Sure makes me miss Pool 2 right now after seeing those nice looking fish.

    Sounds like a fun bite!

  7. Can’t beat them “Silver” jigs. Thanks for letting me tag along on sunday. I slept all day today, think I might finally be caught up.
