Well Mike and I took out the little boat today and dissappeared into the backwaters.
We were interested in busting some bucket mouths.
Mike was using toads and rats, I was using my old stand by Silver spoon with a trailer.
We went right to the slop and it was thick.
We had alot more blow-ups then we had connections, but that has to be my favorite way to catch them.
This first photo is of Mike with the first one of the day.
The weather was hot, hot, hot, and the bite was not far behind. We boated 10 nice legal bass. We were getting about 4 to 1 blow ups to hook ups. I guess we will have to work on that.
It was nice getting off the main channel and only seeing three other boats all day. We were in some very skinny waters..the fish seemed to be using the slop nearest the most moving water of the areas.
These fish were coming out of two and three feet of water covered with very thick slop.
We were seeing alot of small sunfish in the areas and that is a good sign.
Here is another photo of Mike with a nice Bucket mouth on a toad.
Well before we quit I had to photo one of mine.
Like I said I was using spoons and trailers. Mike did catch more of them today but mine were nicer.
Mike was using 17 pound test mono I was using 14 pound test Fireline.
With my spoons the fish were really hitting behind me alot and I never did get that worked out but the ones that wanted it really exploded on it.
We had a couple bust right at the boat which really changes the color of your shorts in a hurry.
But it is really a blast to take them this way.
One other thing I would like to mention is a good pair of polarized sunglasses really helps in this presentation.
We did have a few Northern and a few bite offs. But all in all it was a very fun day spent chasing the green fish.
Take care and I hope everyone had a great fourth of July.
Hope to see you on the water.
I don’t know who is luckier, Vandy to have a nephew like Mike…or Mike having an Uncle like Vandy!?
You guys sure have a lot of fun!
Great report!
Tuck, i was thinking the same thing. My hat is off to you Greg and your relationship with Mike. Something I would have cherished greatly at that time in my life.
Hot out it was, but what a way to celebrate the 4th. Nice fish guys
Oh no….Mike has Uncle Greg hooked on the ”other” fish. Seriously, nice fish guys. Thanks for the report and pics. Did you buy a new toy [boat] Greg?
Thanks, Bill
Yes Bill I got another boat.
Picked it up from one of the bass guys in Rochester and he had it tricked out.
She is a sweet get off the main channel rig.
Down here in Wabasha the past few years you can fish the main channel until about 10 am and then she turns into the ocean. I wanted something to get back into the shallow backwaters where I have not frequented often in low water conditions.
Here is what she looks like.
Thanks Jim she is a sweet rig.
Thats a nice lookin jon boat Greg, it looks fast and i’ll bet it is.
She looks sweet Greg. I know you have been looking for one so figured thats what you got. They are fun.
Thanks, Bill
Way to go Mike & Greg! Do I know the spot?
