Well, I finally had a few slower days in my boat this past weekend on Mille Lacs. This past weekend I shared my boat with Stacie and her brother Tyler. Again we had one day of the weekend where the lake was relatively hot and calm. I can not remember a Summer where I was able to enjoy 4 flat calm days on Mille Lacs. I’m sure they happen, but just not very often on the weekend. You could tell with the amount of boats out on the flats, OMG. Well, just like in the past when it gets hot, Stacie seems to put big fish in the boat. Well, this weekend was no different as she outdid her personal best again.
This was Tyler’s third time on Mille Lacs and it did not take him long to follow in his sister’s footsteps of putting big fish in the boat. As his 3 rd trip yielded him a 28” fish . This fish was real rough and old looking and looked pretty beat up, but a legal 28” er non the less. Over all the bite has slowed for me this past weekend. A few schools I have been working either split up or moved. With the aid of modern tecnology and some help, I was able to locate another monster school of fish and stumbled across another one. I was graphing tons of bugs and bait fish, with game fish mixed in. However, I was having a real tough time figuring them out this past weekend. I’m not sure if it was the heat, the few fronts that moved through the last few days, they have filled their bellies fill of bugs, or I just did not figure out what they wanted.
The fish did seem like they wanted things a little slower this past weekend. Instead of being 2 mph to mid 2’s, I seemed to be getting bit from 1.7-2.0 mph. The other thing was the strikes were not fast and furious for the most part like previous weeks. This past weekend you really had to pay attention to the boards and watch for suddle changes or bites. Even with the drags set really light, Tyler’s 28”er just seemed to give just a few yanks and drop the board back a little. If we had not seen this, I’m not sure we would have known we had a hook up. Earlier in the day we dragged a 25” fish around for who knows how long? I have been dabbling around in some other presentations lately that have showed some sign of promise, but just don’t have them dialed in yet and hard to tell with the slower bite if it is the presentation or the fish not cooperating.
Well, this week I have a trip set up with SLACK (Ron) for the Brandon Rolen Foundation trip. I’m pumped I just hope that the bite returns to the torrid pace for one more day. I would be interested in hearing replies from other guys fishing Mille Lacs as what they have seen these past few weeks. Has the bite slowed down for the people pulling blades, rigging, corking etc. In looking back for me the bite has slowed down some, but I guess it has slowed from a torrid pace probably back to more normal standards. After my trip with Slack this week, I might be taking a break for the rest of the month unitl the 28th of July from “THE BIG OVAL”. You guys keep her warmed up for me and as Arnold has said, "I’LL BE BACK".

Here is another shot of Tylers legal 28″ er. She was in rough shape and had seen better days, but she put up one heck of a battle boat side making some great runs once she saw the boat. She gave her all and gave the 300 Shimano Tekota and Tyler all they could handle.
Here is a fish from Sunday as we made a quick 2 hour trip to find some fish. This day was not so calm and a little more what I am used to seeing for Mille Lacs.
My 2 favortie fishing Buddies.
Lil quality Bro & Sis time.
Great report Rob, as usual. Nice looking fish. By the way, when is the BIG day?
John
Thanks John.
The big day is September 8th, 2007!
Wow Rob- Getting close. You know they always say “get your fishing in before you get married, cause you won’t get out much once you do.” However, I don’t think that one fits for you. It looks like you will probably fish more once you and Stacie the walleye queen tie the knot.
John
Excellent report Rob! And tell Stacie and her brother congrats on their personal bests!
Interested in hearing more about your different presentations. I too, have been experimenting but have not found consistency.
I’m headed up there tonight with a couple of old buddies of mine. Hopefully there will be some left over hungry walleyes from this weekend.
Great report Rob. Maybe we’ll see you up there this week.
I don’t fish Mille Lacs very often, But I took my son that dosn’t fish…..I mean this kid really does not like to fish up with Cosby Stick and I on Sat. I don’t know if it was the calm or what, but we only managed 3 fish! We tried trolling for about 2 hours and nothing happening so we changed over to rigging And my son Dan was the 1st up….a personal best 25″ walleye. I’m hoping this would turn him on to fishing a little more! Crosby Stick got into it alittle later with a 24.75″ er and then it was back to Dan with a 14.75 incher! He was pretty proud of himself when he realized he beat the old man and a pro!I’m pretty proud of him too as it was some much needed quality time!
Chappy- Next time just follow Rob and Stacie around
John
I don’t think you can complain to much when your still catching fish like that Rob.
Nice report as always.
Congrats to Stacie and her brother also!
Boog
Do ya think I wasn’t looking for her……..Ahhh I mean them!
Thanks Guys!
Chappy that was the info I was looking for. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one struggling. I’m glad to hear you and Crosby got the boy out on a few fish. We fished for 5 hours and came up with 9 or 10 fish. I think the smallest was a 21″.
Boog I’m not complaining about the fish, I was just wondering if it has slowed down for others also. I referenced the slow down to getting back to probably more normal fishing rahter than being slow. I think that May to Mid-End June had spoiled many of us up there.
Chappy look harder.
I hear ya Rob and I know you weren’t really complaining.
It’s similar to what happens here on Lake Wisconsin.
Except we don’t catch near as many big fish like you guys do.
Boog
nice report Rob may not have had quantity but sure looks like the quality was there.
We spent all of our time on the north end….I’m sure you were parading Staci around the flats!!!
Dan caught his fish on big spinners and Stick caught his on just a rig with Yellow floater.Marked alot of fish, but they all seemed to be under bugs!
Congratulations to you and Stacie! And great report as usual! Here is to many more great memories for the two of you after you tie the knot!
Nice job getting Stacie and her bro on some quality fish Not that Stacie needs to catch any more big fish than she already has this year
I would have loved to join you guys this weekend but the smallies were calling my name I had a good weekend up at the cabin and absolutely the bronze backs! A few walleyes even made it to the frying pan Sunday morning
Let’s keep shooting for Late July and get Stacie that big fish she’s really looking for
Some very nice fish…looks like a great time
Another great report Rob. Nice fish there.
Great walleye Stacie
And anytime you want to catch a fish that fights just call
DAMN, Rob, you guys are ALways catchin big fish! Nice report!
We did well early each day and then slowed come mid morning. Sun we hit the west side and were on the water by 5:30am and did best until 9 or so. Even had a sea sick passenger sun. I did much better trolling Thur and fri than sat and sun.
I was up on friday, holy cow was it slow, I tried everything, even pulling cranks in no mans land, I just couldn’t get anything going so halfway thru the day I switched gears and musky fished. P.S. you have great fishing buddies, my fishing buddies aren’t nearly as good looking as yours.
Thanks Guys!

I was up yesterday for a short trip with my wife, and boy has the trolling bite slowed. It was downright tough. The baitfish have exploded out in the basin, which seems to have curbed their appetites for shiny pieces of wood and plastic. I’m going to give her one more go on Saturday with four lines. Then it’s time to let all of these beauties fatten up for the fall.
Great reports as usual Rob. I didn’t post this earlier since I was pre-fishing for the tournament, but the day you posted that cheap sunglasses let you down I pulled two 29.5″ fish trolling right next to you. (Well at least I think it was you. You were about 75 yards away, but in the same general area.) Both came on cheap sunglasses. Thought you’d get a kick out of that.
Good luck with your wedding by the way.
