Mississippi River Pool 7 Bass Fishing Report

Saturday was a fantastic day to spend on the river. Beautiful weather conditions, hints of fog, a light wind and the report of a Mayflt hatch. Too bad I only had a couple hours of my time to devote to chasing Bass before I had to head out of town for the day.

Lack of time certainly didn’t lead to lack of quality fish. The bite for me has been nothing but incredible. If they aren’t eating a Brovarney Swim Jig, then they are more than willing to pounce on a 4.5" tube in the Green Pumpkin w/ Red Flake pattern. The first Bass pictured here taped out and 18.75" long with the mouth closed and the tail pinched. She fell victim to the previously mentioned 4.5" tube.

The second Bass pictured was caught by my Dad on a Green Pumpkin Brush Hog. These 2 fish were caught flipping Lilly Pad edges on current swept banks.

The Mayfly hatch has really turned these fish on in the last few days. Both of these fish were caught after seeing them feed on the Bluegills that were eating the Mayflies. It’s almost like sight fishing. If you saw a couple pads move and flipped in there with Texas Rigged plastics all you had to do was hold on. The fish were so aggresive they’d almost set the hook themselves. It doesn’t get much easier.

If anyone’s been following the posts in the Bass Forum then you know I’ve been having a great time with some Brovarney Swim Jigs I’ve recently purchased. The bite started for me last week in a small friends and family tourney. Throughout the week it’d bugged me not knowing if that day was a fluke or not, so I started the day with the Swim Jig. I was almost instantly rewarded with nice sized Bass. It sure is great to have a steady pattern that produces nice sized fish. If you look closely you can see the Swim Jig hanging out this fish’s mouth.

The weights on the lures we chose today was 1/4oz on the Swim Jigs and the Texas Rigged plastics. I encourage everyone to get out the next few days as the bite Bass are feeding very well. If you see a big Red-Head in a camo War Eagle tin boat with a silver Mariner stop by and say Hi!

Nice fish blue! What were your coordinates?

One mile east of Naked Lady slough and about 300 yards to the north.

  2. Very nice fish and an even better looking area for fishing
So, did you put a clinic on for your Dad, or did he have to show you up

  3. Looks like a good time Blue, nice Bass

Some people think the mayfly hatch shuts fish down, but as you found and said, I also believe it gets them feeding.

  4. Blue,
I took your advice into the Ace Hardware Monday night Bass Tournament. I went through one bag of Mizmo pumpkin tubes then changed to my favorite a Mizmo bubble bee colored tube. Both worked equally well but I could not get the big fish to bite. While it appeared the May Flies are done I still caught a good number of 15″ to 16″ fish and even gave up three hooks to a 15 LB northern. (Yes when I hooked him the third time there were two hooks stuck in the corner of his mouth and now there is three because I did not get him the third time either.) At nights end I weighed in 2 of my biggest bass totaling 5 LB 6 OZ which is a far cry from my catch last week of 7 LBS 7 OZ. (2 fish is all each boat can weigh.)

Too all you boater and fishers have a safe holiday and good luck fishin.

  5. I agree, those swim jigs have been proving themselves up here on the upper miss.
    Easy to fish and effective!

    Great report buddy!
