Crankin Clear lake Ia Yellows

I went to the lake Fri afternoon in hopes of crankin up some walleyes but they had lockjaw but at the end of our trip I found some yellows that were hungry since it was to HOT to mess with fish I decided to return in the am to get the makings for a fish fry.

I got on the water about 7 am and went straight to the north shore rushes in 9ft and commensed to troll. I only had to go about a 100 yards and the first fish was in the boat.I spent the next 2 1/2 hours putting ten nice fish in the boat for a fish fry.I used the cranks pictured trolled at 2 1/2 mph at about a foot off bottom and targeted the 9ft range and caught fish consitently. Many of these fish were over ten inches and thats big for yellows and they produced some nice fillets.I could not stand the fact that the walleyes kicked my tail the night before so I went back in pursuit again and all I can say is I got butt kicked two days in a row.I did not get anything going on cranks so my next outing will have to be bait. The lake was like glass and maybe getting alittle chop will help.Still a good weekend with a good fish fry to boot

I noticed alot of other anglers were also having luck on the yellows in the same area,s using jig minnow/ slip bobber minnow and rigging floater and minnows.Hopefully the yellows will continue to bite the rest of summer as they are srappy and good fish for the younguns. And unbeatable in the fry pan

  1. Hey Joe, nice batch of fish!

They sure are fun, fighting fish aren’t they? I’ve gotta get up there and fish the IGL some time! Looks like two of those baits are some of my favorites for pool 14 eyes.

  2. Great report Joe! Where does one get bait in clear lake now? I only know of a shop on the south shore is there something on the north side?
