6/28/07 – Lake Zumbro Report

What a great morning to be on the water. Pastor Jim and I decided to go out to Lake Zumbro for a couple hours of bluegill and crappie fishing. With the stable weather the past few days, we found the fish to be in their predictable summer areas. The fish were more than willing to bite and show us some good action.

Once again we used our favorite lure – the mini-mite jigs. We targeted areas with steep dropping shorelines that had suspended fish. Most fish were suspended around the 8-10 ft. level over 12-20 FOW. They active fish would come up several ft. to hit the jigs.

We seemed to get more bluegills if tipping the jigs with a waxie, but all the crappies came on plain jigs without meat. There were also several bass today, nothing too big, but fun to catch! The hot color today was once again purple body with a chartreuse head. I’ve always referred to that color combination as the Lake Zumbro color – wonder why?

We easily caught and released 50+ fish in our couple hours this morning. It was a great day to be out on the water! Good company, good fishng, beautiful weather – it doesn’t get much better than that! Hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy some great fising soon.

Been fishing Rochester and the surrounding area for 40+ years. I love all the lakes, rivers, and impoundments around Rochester, as well as pool 4 of the Mississippi.

  1. Nice report Mike, I will be heading up north over the 4th for strictly bull gills. Hope to get that 12 incher, great report!!

  2. Thanks for the report and pics. Its always a great time when being on the water and throwing in some fish makes it even better. I love catching walleyes on the big river but when you get the kind of action that a person gets when fishing Lake Zumbro its very hard to stay away from there.
    Thanks, Bill
