Crankin Pool 4

What a beautiful weekend to be out on Lake Pepin, I have just got moved into my new house, so I have been a little busy lately but still managed some time to get out. If you enjoy pulling cranks then I would strongly suggest a trip to pool 4. I was able to share the boat with my twin nephew Kyler Moenck who helped put a 2 man limit in the boat in about 2 hours. Lead or braid really didn’t matter that morning, as long as you were able to work the 14 ft. break you would end up with a nice batch of 15-18 inch fish.

Sunday on the other hand was a totally different story, I have really noticed that the fish I have been following have been on the move. The spot that you would do well in one day would goose egg you the next. Today hands down lead was out producing braid and if I wasn’t using a bright firetiger or floresecnt color you wouldn’t get bit. Also I had to slow my speed down today to about 1.9 MPH. I have recently bought a new shorty rod from Everts Resort and put an Okuma Magna 25 line counter reel from Hooked on Fishing. This has been a excellent lead core combo, you can really see you lure working and at 5ft it handles the fish nicely. The reel holds about 6 colors of 27lb lead, better yet you can get yourself set up with this combo for about $80. Here was a nice eater eye that fell to a J5 Firetiger shorty combo.

The school of fish I have been follwing has seemed to be making its way south. I can’t stress enough how different of moods these fish have been in lately. Yesterday it was speeds from 2-3 MPH and when I cranked the tiller on the break from making an S turn my outside rod would get pounded. Yesterday my best colors were perch glass and original Blue or Black and Gold #7’s and jointed were not producing. While today they would only hit really bright colors in the jointed version and you had to keep your speed below 2 MPH and you would find some nice fish like these.

The last picture is with Kyler putting the smack down on the eyes and saugs. On Sunday I went to put out my lead core set up and I noticed my hot #7 goldfish was missing. So I decided to call Kyler at 6 A.M. and ask him if he knew where it was. As expected he hasn’t returned my call yet but I am sure he is just keepin it safe for old uncle Joe.

Tight Lines,
