Mille Lacs Lake fishing report 6-17-07

This past Saturday was not just another day on the pond! I had the opportunity to share my boat with Nate Sundberg (aka sundogg44) and his father Wally. As a guide you just never know how the trip is going to go! well this trip was no different….yes we caught fish, but it was not the fish that these two really wanted to catch! After a short time on the water they asked about catching ellpout!! ellpout, well thats a new one….they said that if I was a true guide, I would need to put them on some ellpout. Well read on more to this twist on the pout!!!

We started out pulling blades on a rock to mud transisition area that had been producing fish for me prior. Only on this day we had some other boats to share our fish and space with. It was a bit over crowded for this fisherman and I needed to find my space. I made my move to a southend gravel area next. There we found some active. Some slots and a few over’s that went back to fight another day. At noon we took a short break at Hunters Point Resort for a burger. ending our morning with only four slots in the box. The plan after lunch was to hit the mud and catch some big fish.

After lunch again the guys asked about catching a pout!! these guys really had their mind set on this. As it turned out…..I failed to put a pout in the boat, only to hear about one that was swiming near the surface of the water near Josh Hukriede on another flat near us!!! Oh man if I would have only been on the spot, I could have filled this fathers day wish and provided them a pout!!! no kidding.

We ended our day keeping 9 slots that were from 16 inches on up to 19 inches. Nate had the hot hand on this day! Our biggest fish came in at 26 inches with a fair number of 23-25 inch fish mixed in. Later in the afternoon we found a school of fish that put another 5 fish in the box. We tried to fill our limit but ended our day a bit short. Working the edges of the flat in the afternoon was the ticket while fishing off the flat in 29-32 FOW was the ticket for the bigger fish earlier in the day. Blades and crawlers caught all our fish on this day. I enjoyed my day on the water with these two great guy’s!!

The fishing continues to be good on the pond. Try and make some plans to get up here and catch some of these walleyes while the bite is hot!!

Oh god, it was hilarious. At one point Bob and I just looked at each other and were like, “What the heck can we do?” The man had a dark cloud over his head for about 5 hours!

Thanks again, Bob, it was a blast! And I’ll be your wingman any time!

  3. To elaborate more about the pout….

I was out fishing a flat during the FLW League and my partner looks over and says “There’s an eel pout”. I figured no big deal, it was one that had died and was floating on the surface of the water. So I looked over and I couldn’t believe it, the eel pout wasn’t dead and it was swimming around about 10′ from the boat on the surface of the water!!!! Boy that thing must have been lost. One of the strangest things I’ve seen on Mille Lacs.
