Mississippi River Pool 4 Walleye Report 5-28-07

Monday I had an invite to fish the top end of Pool 4.

River Rat Randy Stevens told me to come jump in and we would go looking for some hungry eyes.

The weather has been up and down with the winds being the biggest factor for boat control.

The water temp was 65 degrees and I sure wished it would warm a bit more.

The fishing is pretty much pick your technique and go for it.

We took fish rigging bait, dragging jigs and pulling cranks.

This first shot is a nice eye we took dragging on a leech.

We were targeting sand flats and current seams 4 to 12 feet of water.

This next shot is of Randy with a nice eye we cranked up on a number five crank bait. This fish came out of six feet of water.

The rains of late colored the water at the north end but the fish were still chasing baits.

We changed spots and techniques all day long.

We ended our day with a one man limit of fish.

There were alot of big cruisers and plenty of wind to go around.

We docked the boat about 4:00 pm.

Went to Everts and started spinning the fish stories. It was great to be on the water with good friends and another great Memorial day goes into the memory banks.

Thanks Randy for a great day.

I Hope everyone had a great safe holiday.

I would also like to just take a moment to remind everyone, using the Mississippi River as a recreational area.

The barges running the river have the right of way. Stay aware and a safe distance from them.

I witnessed a very unsafe situation this weekend, that could have ended very badly if it wasn’t for the quick actions of the Captain on said barge.

The river is flowing better than five miles an hour. With the wind blowing down river you can really be sailing along and not realize it. When a child on a tube dumps they are really moving down river fast.

Stay safe and use your common sense.

Hope to see you on the water.

  3. Hi Greg, I had the “smaller red lund”. Was fishing with Gary Speicher. We ran across you guys a couple of times. We did manage one eye about 28″ and two right at 19″. We spent quite a while running the Wis. channel. Maybe we should have been fishing a little more. It is nice to put a live face with the names I here about all the time. Very nice fish!!! Jeff Knies
