Lake Menomin Report

The bite remains in high gear. What presentations are the hottest?

Well Friday the crank bite was going so good I did not try any other presentatios! With just a short amount of time this morning, I opted to start with the cranks right away. Ok, every once in awhike I make the right decision. I did try a favorite area for big fish, first thing but to no avail. I then headed for the same flat the procduced Friday. The first few trolling passes gave me rod bending action from perch and whites. Niether species found their way to the boat yesterday. The whites kept both rods busy until the eyes finally showed up.

It did not really take too long to start banging eyes, it was just fun with the whites. I varied trolling speed from 1.4 to 2.5 mph. Doing radical direction change on the speed up and slow down. Most hits came with either the crank stalled out or quickly picking up speed. 11 ft of water on the flat seemed to be the ticket with a few fish being tsken when coming out of deep water off the edge. When the crank bite slowed, I opted to 3 ways and crawlers.

The 3 way kicked butt earlier in the week. Today was a little slower but the eyes caught were running a tad bigger. trolling speeds of .8 to 1.1 mph seemed to do the trick. I thought the whites and perch would go nuts on crawlers but the only thing I pulled was eyes. I did not experiment with assorted blade sizes or colors. The black thumper blades have been doing quite well. I think any color or size of blade will work right now. Drifting livebait would probably well also.

Not too serious about pictures today but here are some I hope you enjoy. #1 captain Kota at the helm. #2 "come on its an eye, get it in the boat"! #3 "net, we don’t need no stinkin net".

Well, I’m off to the on the water boat show show over at Wissota Marina. The fish are spanking so get out and enjoy! Oops, almost forgot this one. #4 a little time out for some fetching.

  1. Thanks for the report Don, I was out last night and did good, the water temps are moving around a lot, will be nice when they settle down.

  2. Looking for prespawn giller’s. Lots of cruising fish with many being females loaded with spawn. Was referring to the temps. in the shallows. Hope to get out later this week and target some walleyes, but those giller’s are so darn big—and tasty.

  3. Yep, they should be going for the ARM event. If you are pursuing eyes, the Thundersticks and Reef Runners in craw color have been the ticket.

  4. Figure that will be my game plan, target some gills first. I think the lake will have many options as most species should be cooperative during that time frame.

  5. Can’t wait to hit the lake this weekend, Are you trolling the edges of drop offs or up on the flats? Is there a magic depth? I just can’t seem to find the walleyes.

  6. Been doing well on the flats. 11 ft of water has been good. Speeds from 1.5 to 2.2 mph. Thundersticks and Little Rippers. I will be out this weekend, stop by and say hello .

  7. I’ll be out this weekend, mainly on Menomin-but may run down to Pepin as well. Hoping the weather is nice one of the evenings so I can get my little girl out there. Too many good places this time of year, thought of running up to the St. Louis, but the ole gas prices turning that thought down when fish can be caught closer to home.

  8. Bill, last time I was out I did some jigging up there. Getting fish but they were running on the small side. I did better following the channel out into the lake and then trolling between 13 and 6 ft.
