Multi-Species Milford Lake, Kansas

My friend Jeremy Hall and I hit Milford Lake this weekend. It didn’t seem to matter what you were fishing for, the bite was on this weekend.

We hit the water about 6:15 am. We started out in a cove near the dam. It’s amazing what a little rain will do. Milford was up to full pool and they were drawing water. The water clarity we a couple of feet around the dam area. Jeremy hooked up with the pictured smallie shortly after getting started. He caught it on a shakey head in about 8 feet of water. That was the biggest smallie of the day. We switched back and forth between finess fishing and cranks all morning. We fished this cove for an hour or so before deciding to move. A number of smaller smallies and white bass were caught before leaveing.

We didn’t go too far before the water turned to chocolate milk. We fished a cove in Rush creek for about an hour to see if we could get anything. I caught this nice wiper on a Bandit 200 series brown splatter crankbait in about 3 feet of water. That was the only bite we had in this area.

We went back to the dam looking for clearer water. We fished the entire dam for the rest of the morning. If I had to guess I’d say we caught another 20 smallies and half dozen walleye and half dozen whites on crankbaits. We didn’t think to get a picture, but our best walleye was 17 3/4". The bite started out pretty slow. I noticed the fish were hitting my old Tenn shad colored "Junior D" crankbait either when it was first diving or when I was pulling it out of the water. I switched to a Lucky Craft SKT mini shallow runner in the chanteuse shad color and saw an immediate change. I caught a walleye on the fist two casts and then it seemed I’d catch something once every ten casts or so. Overall it was a decent day. Since we weren’t tourney fishing it didn’t matter what we caught. It seemed like the fish had the feed bags on. The conditions were perfect to get the younger kids out and put them on fish.

I talked with a local guy and he said the walleye bite has been great the last couple days. He had limited out for the past three days. He said the walleye we extremely easy to catch right now. If anyone is looking for some good fishing I recommend heading to Milford for the weekend.

  1. Great report Jason. I was hoping to make it to Milford this spring but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Too busy with tournaments from here on out.

  2. Thanks for the report. I will be heading to Milford next week for several days looking for the eyes. That chocolate milk water scared me away this weekend, but it sounds like it didn’t hurt anything.
