Lake Menomin

The main target was walleyes but when you can get the rod bending on multi-species, what could be better.

Friday, Steve took some well deserved time off to spend some time on the water. Looking for a few eaters, we would see if the jigging bite had picked up. It had been slow after the opener. Started jigging off the main channel in 6 to 11 ft. The fish were not on a terror but we ended up with a few fish including this nice eater Steve popped on a jigging spoon. Saturday was more of the same. Started out jigging the same area in 11 ft. Picked up 4 eyes fairly quick on hair jigs. Then the bite slowed to a crawl.

With the water temp rising as fast as it did, I figured the fish were quickly dispatching to the lake. Friday Steve and I got a good bite going. We were trolling Reef Runner little rippers. No one color had it locked in, our best results came from switching up often. Saturday again was close to the same presentation, with a few modifactions. On this day I decide to run boards both shallow and deep. I ran the inside boards up in 6 ft of water and the outside boards in 13. The inside boards were pulling more northerns and some dandy bass. The outside board did not get as many bites but when it did it was eyes. Two if our best baits for the day were JR. Thundersticks and Frenzy FS9. (photo 2) When this bite died off, I switched to a more weedy flat on the main lake. We picked up a few fish but thought we may do better with 3 ways and spinners.

The 3 way presentation was by far the best action of the day. We ran a variety of blade colors and all caught fish. 11 to 14 ft of water held the most fish. Vary the speed from .8 to 1.2 mph. Both crawlers and leeches were working. Photo 3 is Jack and John with some 3 way walleyes. If you like fast rod bending action for a variety of species, hit the lake with cranks and spinners. see ya on the water, Don.

  1. Great to hear Don! I plan to try and fish this lake a fair ammount this summer. I still cannot commit to the event on the first weekend of June but I will let you know if I can. Would you ever have an open seat on your boat for a lake Menomin noobie? If not any tips would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Thanks for the report Don, only fishing I got to do over the weekend was Sunday off a dock in Prairie Du Chien and was out fished by a seven year old! Good to see a young kid so fired up about fishing.
Heard a good report from a buddy on Friday, seems the lake is getting going–not bad for a dead sea.

  3. I would tell ya there Brian. I did nail a nice yellow belly on the opener though. I would like to get a mess of em to smoke.
