I was off early Fri mourning to pre-fish for another I.O.W.A. walleye tourny and once again mother nature was not kind.I had rain and wind all the way down. But when I got there even though it was still windy. The lake was still fishable.
I was not on the water 2 hrs and I four walleye in the boat from 14 to 19 in. I used the same pattern in Buck Creek bay that worked a few years back. I was tossing Bill Dance fat free shads on the points in 3ft of water and dragging a lindy rig and floater with a crawler out the back in 7 to 9 ft of water. I left this area and went to the main lake to try and find more eyes and even though I never found any main lake eyes doing this same pattern I did find that if I drifted off the points into 16 ft or more there were crappies suspended on just about every point. Now its times like this that you wish you were not prefishing as I would have loved to have concentrated on the crappies as they were very nice fish.Even though I did get a couple on crawler they went nuts on the thumper jig and minnow about 10 ft down in 16 ft. Some day I want to go back and just fish crappie has this lake has a reputation as on of the best in the midwest with many crappie tournys every year.
I wish I would have taken pics of the first eyes I caught but there were other tourny anglers in the area and anyone that fishes tournys knows that you best not be olding up fish for pics or you are going to have alot of company. My plan was to take pics of our catch at the weighin.
The weather dealt us a fatal blow on Sunday game day.The last time I seen clouds like that was on the weather channel and them goofy storm chasers were taking the pics.We had to call off the tourny and I wish we could have fished as we had found fish in a few other locations and we were ready. In talking to other teams after it was cancelled they to were on fish and just about every technique was covered trolling flats, suspended fish. pitching jigs and crawlers. rigging bait. It was a shame mother nature dealt us a fatal blow because I think it would have been a heck of a weigh-in.In my opion this lake is one of the best crappie and walleye lakes in the midwest and deffinetly I cannot wait to return.
