Pool 8 Crappies 4/29/07

Ratted tails, sore backs, and sore mouths were a sure sign the spawn is heating up. I headed to a spot just off a side channel and onto a sand/gravel shelf and anchored up at 5:30am. The front of the boat was in 5fow and the back was over 9fow with 20 feet being just another 5’ away. The water temp in this area was 60.9 degrees and holding some nice fish.

The first bite was best casting a minnow on a #10 hook 3 feet below a bobber into shallower water. A slow twitch retrieve was un-resistible for some of the big girls. I ended up keeping one that was 13 1/2" because of a gut hook and put back 5 of the same size so they could finish doing there thing I did however keep some 11 inch plus fish for the fryer! The minnow bite started to die off around 7:15 so a Swedish Pimple tipped with a minnow head went over the side of the back of the boat. This picture is the average size crappies that were being caught.

The crappies were inhaling the Pimple up until around 8:00 with the bite staying hot but a little more finesse needed to persuade a bite. By 8:30 there was a nice fish fry in the cooler and it was time to play catch and release. There was a good bite going up till 9:15 with a few still taking the Pimple until things were packed up at 10am. There were at least 30 some crappies that came boat side this morning Light tackle and nice crappies sure made for a fun morning on the water. Can you see the Pimple in this picture Now that’s a hit

This pic is one of the big girls caught off the sand/gravel bed. You can see how beat up they get making indentations in the sand and gravel, gotta hurt, don’t ya think 3 scoops of minnows were used today and 2 of the scoops were used just for the heads, almost seems like waist but a tactic that is putting fish in the boat I was also surprised at the numbers of boat that went right on bye leaving this area all to myself.

Good luck on the water!!

    Excellent report as well!

I’m going to have to give those pimples a try up here. Never used them for crappies before. Sure would be great to learn a new trick!

    Thanks for the great report.
