With the walleye season coming to an end this Sunday 2-25-07 most fisherman that will be making the trip to the pond will be in search of perch! The last few trips out I have experienced a mixed bag of results. No real pattern or time frame to the perch bite! Sometimes its morning….sometimes midday!!! and sometimes late day…..Thats fishing
This past Tuesday I had the opportunity to fish with fellow IDA member puddlepounder. I found Tom fishing one of the many flats that Mille Lacs Lake has to offer! After have a poor time of it fishing the rock to mud transitions near shore. I made up my mind that I was going to look out on the flats for active perch. These recent trips have put both walleye and perch on the ice for us! The walleye are still active along with the perch bite. The jumbo perch have been hitting 1/4oz JB weasels and 1/4oz Go devils in the yellow and orange colors. You might ask why the 1/4 oz baits? well it keeps the smaller perch from bitting and limits the larger jumbo’s to the taking. I have fished the lil’cecels that BFT has been selling but have caught big and small perch on that presentation with worms. I really only want to catch 12+ inch perch and larger and thats the reason for the larger spoon selection!!!
The active perch that we have found have come from the top of the flat and sometimes just off the flat on the bottom edge, just as you get out into the deeper water along the flat. Hole hopping can allow you to search out these fish and at the same time still catch some nice walleye!!
The first photo has puddlepounder with his fish from Tuesday. A few jumbos and a mix of walleye…nice meal of fish!!! The other photo is David from Buffalo,Mn. with a nice 25 inch walleye caught during the middle of the day! And also a picture of yours truly wearing my new Gamehide camo bibs with a 25 ich’er that came during the noon hour run!!!
If you are planning a trip up to Mille Lacs plan to look to the flats for some active perch’n!! Hunters Point Resort has marked roads out to many of the mid lake flats. The snow at this time is not bad out there for your travel. It may change with the weather forecast this weekend! If you are coming up this weekend make plans to attend the Mille Lacs Lake Perch Extravaganza that will be held out of Hunters Point Resort 9 miles north of Isle on Saturday 2-24-07. They will be giving out some great prizes for the big perch and also some dandy doors prizes…..hope to see you this weekend!!!
Nice fish there Bobber!
Excellent Report! Thanks Bobber!
Nice running into you yesterday….After I talked to you I ended up catching 4 more eater walleyes and 1 nice fat 25″ fish as well…No perch on that mud at all yesterday!!! Went into the shoreline break to talk to a few friends and watched them catch perch on the camera for a while….very interesting…Seen one perch attack the camera about 7-8 times before he bit!!! Crazy fish!!!
Sounds like you had a great day. Great report Bob.
Cant wait to get back up next month Bobber. Keep those holes hot..

Good luck,
Corey Bechtold
Lets go!!!! I am up for learning a new area, anytime!!!!
Great report Bob! See you for cards tonight!
Was up all day wednesday and had a great day.Not much for perch but plenty of eye action.Have to credit to the guys on this site for the infomation.I had been fishing the same west flat for last few weeks and been getting some large and small fish but only fished the deeper edge of the flat.Reading about the fish being more active on top had me work that area harder and it really paid off.The deeper edge was good, had the wife set up there but she caught all of the large fish, she was pretty happy too.Really like this site, seems like the guys will give out information and and there is no body posting critical remarks.Thanks,Burl.
We ended up with 16 jumbos on Saturday. Not as many fish on the camera this day, but more biters when you did see them. Not suprising with the front coming in I imagine.
