Lake Minnewaska 2/18/2007

I spent Sunday 2/18/07 with my dad and my kids on Minnewaska trying to find those dandy Bluegills that roam that lake. After drilling a series of holes away from the crowds on anglers fishing the first shoreline break weed line we were on the fish. Despite being cold and windy, the fish cooperated all afternoon. Here is Cole with a typical Minnewaska Bluegill that fell victim to a #8 Pink/Purple Mini Mert.

The fish were very aggressive for midwinter bluegill and as long as there were fish present on the camera, they would bite. Cole was using the MarCum VS 460 and watching all the fish bite. According to his count he caught over 50 nice bluegill on the day.

My daughter Jadyn also got in on the Bluegill action, as you can see by the next photo. However, Jadyn and I spent more of the day chasing tip-ups. We set 4 tip-ups out when we got there and I never did end up having time to fish for gills. Between the Largemouth, Smallmouth and Pike we kept very busy.

Some of the Bass we caught were very nice. Both tip-ups with sucker minnows and #8 Mini Merts were producing bass and pike. Here is Cole with a dandy Largemouth he fought for quite a while on his 2-pound fluorocarbon. In addition we kept a couple pike that literally swallowed the hook, like this nice 6 pounder.

We were fishing in 10-14 feet of water and were working the outside weed edge. Because the fish were aggressive we were able to use the bigger #8 Mini Merts with a wax worm. They were hot to say the least!

I don’t get to fish Minnewaska much anymore but every time I do I am reminded why I love that lake so much. Between the Bass, Bluegill and Pike the action was fast and furious, just how I like it when the kids are with. For anyone looking for a great day on the ice with their family, Minnewaska is a great lake to spend the day on and a really nice way to get a great dinner. All Bass were released without incident. 1. Hey Scott!
Minnewaska isn’t a bad walleye lake either. My in-laws are just 15 miles from there and I get out on Minnewaska quite a lot. Great report sir!

The smiles on those kids faces says it all Scott

thats what makes it a great day fishing

  4. Great Report Scott!! Awesome photos…it looks like Cole is showing the two older guys up…

Tell him congrats on the nice fish!!

  5. Since my last report Jadyn gave herself a really short hair cut So, it is taking some time to get use to seeing her with such short hair

I was actually back on Minnewaska again last night because Cole was begging to go back. He has really taken to using the underwater camera to watch the fish bite. But, whatever keeps him interested is good for me

The bite was excellent again last night. We caught 6 pike and 5 Bass in 2 hours on tip-ups so that kept us running. The Pike were all female and were between 4-8 lbs. The Bass were very nice most running about 3 lbs. The Bluegill were very nice again although none of the fish were as aggressive as the day before. Although, if a person wanted to keep fish, catching a limit of nice bluegill would not take long.

  6. Greta report Scottie. The pictures of your kids are priceless. You better look out, your son will be showing you up in no time.
