Lake of the Woods report 2-10-07

This past weekend I was finally able to get my wife and mom up to Lake of the Woods for their first ice fishing experience there. We arrived at Wigwam about 11pm Friday night and were able to briefly meet with Tom and Cat before getting some much needed sleep before our 7am ride to the fish house. In the morning they took us out 26 miles to fish the reefs, and it didn’t take long to get the first fish. Unfortunately, the camera got left in the cabin.

The fishing was a little slow, but we expected that with lows around -25, highs not reaching 0, and high pressure. We caught and released at least 20 small walleyes and sauger on Saturday, keeping another 10 to bring home. The nicest surprise was the perch we got into. We had 8 between 12” and 14”. The biggest walleyes and sauger hit a gold jigging spoon, while the majority of the fish, including the perch, preferred a plain hook under a bobber. Small hooks on 4lb test worked best on theses finicky fish.

We were set to head back out Sunday, but my mom had a bum back and we didn’t want to leave her behind, so we just got out the one day. Big thanks go out to Tom and Cat. It was the first time I have stayed at Wigwam, and won’t be the last. The food and hospitality was second to none. My dad was even able to bring his lab up and stay in the cabin as well as bring him out to the fish house. My wife and I spent our Honeymoon on LOW and plan to start going back up each year.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›
