I like to ice fish – I mean really like it! So another day on the ice was in order. I decided to check out a couple areas of the backwaters on Pool 4 looking for nice bluegills. The ice is still a solid 6 inches, although there was some water on top of it in places. It was very slippery and ice creepers are a must.
I used a diamond jig tipped with a waxie. These are new this year and seem to really be the hot ticket so far. The best color today was glow red. I was fishing in about 5 fow and working the jig up and down the water with short little jiggles. The fish usually hit while the jig was moving.
After checking out several holes, I found a good concentration of fish in a small area. They were actually quite aggressive today, but there were a lot of small ones. I easily caught over 100 fish today, releasing all but a few for some good eating.
Sounds like the night time temps are going to be back below freezing now, so I think the ice should remain in good shape. Try some of these new diamond jigs tipped with a waxie and I think you will be impressed. Now if I can get some reel weeds to try with them – boy, those fish don’t stand a chance! Hope you can get out to try some of this great ice fishing soon!
Mike, can we get a look at that jig?
Nice report!
I knew I forgot something!
Nice report. Where can you get those jigs? They look interesting.
Custom jigs and spins makes a diamond jig. I was thinking about buying some, but now I think I am convinced.
Pencil me in for a couple dozen too!! Those look like great jigs.
A marmooska is also a name for that jig I believe…
Nice looking fish!!
They do look similar to a marmooska, but are slightly different. Around Rochester, you can get them at my store.
Good Fishing,
Mike
Oh Mike. I knew I should have bought out all you had the other day, but you had such a nice selection I couldn’t decide. They sure worked for me on the weekend too.
If you guys within an easy drive want to see a bait shop/tackle store “loaded” with ice fishing gear, stop by Mike’s at HOF on Hwy 63N, Rochester. It’s like a candy store for us ice fishing guys… and if you get hungry for candy while shopping, he has that too !! Thanks for stocking such a fantastic selection Mike…we appreciate having you here for us.
Great report Mike!! Got to love a 100+ fish day!!!!
Those are some nice looking jigs. I might have to give them a try down south here in Nebraska!!
Mike you are having way too much fun. Those jigs will show up very well on the flashers too. Thanks for the report and pics.
Thanks, Bill
Thanks for the report Mike..
What day did you go out? I hope that the ice can make it through the weekend. Where I was on pool 4 there was six inches Sunday, w/ a few shacks & ATVS out. I hope they got those pulled off or they may be structure by the end of the week!
where is pool 4 located? I live in the East Metro, but are not sure where that is.
The dam by Red Wing all the way down to the dam at Alma. (Lake Pepin included)
Nice post Mike, Chris(C&R) & I hit the back waters on Sunday. We caught alot of fish but all were on the small side. We started just over the bridge by nelson wis. And ended up at lake peterson, Again, all fish were on the small side But 2 huge perch. The ice was in good shape & we had no problems. Good Fishin Doug
another
I was out yesterday and went again today. The ice seems to be in good shape where I’ve been. 6 inches of good clear hard ice!
Good Fishing,
Mike
Here is pic from yesterday. This is Pastor Bruce showing off a good catch and some fine eating.
That’s good to hear. Didn’t look like too much water on top of the ice either in that pic. I’ll have to give it a shot this weekend. After the success last weekend it’s to not go out and make an attempt at least.
You can get them same jigs at Fleet Farm in Winona. If anyone was looking.
