Pool 4 Mississippi river sauger

What fantastic weather and the fishing aint bad either. There is nothing better than warm sunshine in November. Plenty of people out enjoying the great fishing on pool 4. The good thing is, it not not seem crowded out there because fish are everywhere.

Started out the pitching early in the morning but I must of picked the wrong area. No fish picthing but Brian K. popped a nice sauger just hold ing the jig vertical. We decided to slowly troll down stream to see if we could get a program together. First trolling pass yieled 6 nice sauger. We spent the rest of the morning until early afternoon, working the vertical bite. Depths from 13 to 17 ft provided the most action for us. Our better fish and best action came from the area between the third wing dam down to the Y.

We did alot of switching up on presentation. Doos, ringies, blades, hair. In the morning we got a great flurry of action by snap jigging ringies. Holding the jig near bottom and give a quick snap a foot or so. The key to this is to drop the jig slowly back down on a tight line. The fish just smacked the jig on the drop!

Dean at Everts has the go to colors on the counter. If your headed down this weekend, he won’t steer you wrong. The best colors for us today were chartreuse orange core and Stewarts prop blue ringies. The top colors for doos were Catalpa Orange, Black Pearl and Silver Glitter. Pic.#1 Brian K. in action. Photo #2. Brian’s go to color.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the fantastic fishing. Like I said the fish seem to be everwhere so don’t worry about it being crowded. Dean has the ramps area running smooth to get you on the water quick. Brian K. will post some more pictures later.

  1. First off…I gotta tell ya, Don Hanson sucks at being a catfish guide!!! Never got one cat!

Stewart Pro Blue ringworm was doing well for me early…all the fish were hooked in the top part of the mouth…and the just SLAMMMED these plastics!

This little guy felt like 5 lbs when she hit.

After Don pulled in 3 fish back to back on the chartrus pepper super doo, I switch and that was the ticket for the rest of the day.

About the time I’m thinkint…hmmm I wonder if there’s any cats over there…WHAMMM! darn rod jumps almost out of my hand…

I’m not sure why some people are stuck on using live bait this time of year? But to each their own!

    What a blue bird day!

  2. Anyone ever notice how the internet…has ruined the fishing on P4?

What a great bunch of people fishing down there!

Except on crabby Ranger guy…he needed to sleep a little later yesterday morning!

  3. Thanks Don!

Another November…dang…almost December day on P4.

Good fishen, good friends and a fantistic day!

Thanks again…I owe you and Kota another one!

  4. Good to see you guys on the pool Don. I know Brian can be a load on the fishing team…It was a hurculean effort on your part I’m sure.

Kota seems like the perfect partner to me Brian!!!

Jarrad and I switched to lighter jigs and i finally started hooking those doggone Saugers.

I will post a report and pics shortly…

  5. Thanks for the report and pics guys. Nice to see Briank fishing for real fish. Thanks for setting him straight Don. Tommy great to see your pic of being back down on pool 4 too.
    Thanks, Bill

  6. It sure was a nice day down there yesterday. Kota did not like my dog Ally very much. I used ringworms all day and didn’t touch livebait either. My best colors were firecracker for pitching and chartreuse pepper for vertical jigging. I did find that the afternoon bite was better for the sauger for me. I did try pitching jigs before dark and caught a 20 and 21 inch walleye, but no big fish. Sounds like I didn’t get out early enough to find the big girls early like Jarrod and Tom as my first fish of the day was a bass. It sure was nice to be back on pool 4 since I haven’t been down there since July.

  7. Nice work gentleman … and Brian With as many boats as have been reported you must have gone to a secluded spot to take your photos If a two pound sauger is hitting like a five pounder I can’t wait to hit the river tomorrow. Kota must like fish? or just muzzled because of all of the other dogs out there.

Good to hear you guys had a good time.

    Chris

  8. yep, it was good to see and talk to everyone out there. I had to put the gentle lead on Kota because Brian forgot to wash his hands and smelled like a big turkey!

  9. Nice job guys.
Don you better be careful with Catfish guy.
Next time I’ll get bigger glasses.
Brian said I was right by you…next time.

  10. Don,
You and Kota deserve the above and beyond the call of duty award… It looks like you had a fun, successful day, despite the obvious ‘kitty wrangler’ handicap

I wondered if maybe Kota caught Brian trying to smuggle some 4oz no rolls and #10 Gama Octopus into the boat, and was just tyring to protect the territory

    dave

  11. The picture of Kota must have been taken in the A.M.because I heard BK all the way in Red Wing hollering Get the net Don,Get the net.But after noon All was quite so I figure you had it on Brian!!!!
