I had the pleasure of having Mike [HOF] and Ron [RHW] in the boat with me today for some multispieces fishing on Lake Zumbro. Read on to see what spieces were caught…
In the first pic you have Ron and a northern that he caught. Yep, those Mini-Mites tiped with a waxie that Ron was using will catch anything that you put that lure in front of. The second pic is of Mike with a fat thick striper that also was caught on a Mini-Mite.
The weather today was great and so was the fishing. Many doubles and many triples made for an interesting and fun day. All fish were caught in deep water jigging. Mike and Ron spent alot of time fishing specificly for gills and crappies while I fished bucktails mostly for big strippers. Its hard to beat the feel of a big striper on the end of your line when jigging in deep water.
Pic three is Ron with his favorite kind of fish to fish for. Hes a bluegill fishing geru in my mind who has a big passion for them. Between him and Mike [another panfish geru] those gills don’t stand a chance. In pic four you find myself with a nice smallie caught on a bucktail jig. I sure wish I could stop time for about three months so I could spend alot more time this year on open water on the Zumbro. Theres just something about open water and fishing for many different spieces that makes it so much fun on the water. The forcast calls for some nice air temps this coming week so be sure and get out on the water because the colder temps come in the week after. Hope to see you on the water.
Thanks, Bill
A day in the boat with the three of you guys had to be fun. Ron, Mike and Bill, could we say ‘the 3 amigos’.
How deep were you jigging? 10, 15, 20ft?
Nice report Bill
dave
Hi Dave. We were fishing in 18-26 ft of water. Vertical jigging. Its a great way to practice your feel, hook setting, and a very fun way to fish as theres plenty of room to feel the fight from bottom to top of the water. Ron kept 6 gills for supper and all the rest were released unharmed except for maybe on smaller striper.
Thanks, Bill
Looks like you gents put down the hammer
You’re right Bill, this time of year is awesome!
Thanks Bill!,
It had to be a fun day. Now if you could keep this nice weather for at least another month
dave
Sure was a fun day! Lots of fish, nice weather, and great company!
Also, lots of fun to fish out of your new boat Bill!
Good Fishing,
Mike
Sounds like you guys had a great day. it is alot of fun to get out and get the multi-specie bite going.
Mike loved to run the front trolling motor in my old boat and with a front platform twice the size he will never give me the front. We also figured out that Mike likes to sit over the best spot. Ron was always telling him to move 5 feet forward so he is over the best spot. Yes it sure was a very fun day. And Mike even survived our threats of throwing the trolling motor captain over board. Sure do love that new boat. Tons of room and storage and a huge front platform and still have lots of room for pulling 3-ways and long lining cranks in the back. In my mind its the best multispieces fishing boat I could find.
Thanks, Bill
How about some boat details Bill….and a picture or two?? What motor did you buy for the new rig?
Bill,
Have you ever pulled any of those strippers through the ice? That would be a blast on an ice rod too!
Never tried it but yes it sure would be fun on an ice rod.
Thanks, Bill
I just traded boats only. I kept both motors [90 hp Johnson 2-stroke and 8 hp Johnson 2-stroke], trolling motor, Eagle trailer, 3 sonars and 2 GPS’s. The boat is a 2006 Alumacraft Navigator 175 CS 17 1/2 ft long and a 93” beam. Tons of room in it and storage, huge front casting platform, very wide. With a bad prop, half tank of gas [20 gal] and me it ran 40.4 gps. With a fixed prop it should add 3 mph. I was VERY surprised at the speed this boat has when rated for a 150 hp and only a 90 hp on it. It has the full double bottom so very smooth ride. Its a VERY nice set up for a multispieces fishing boat, best design/layout I’ve been able to find in my opinion. Thats how much I fell in love with it over the weekend spending two days in it. This boat and I will be down on Lake Zumbro and Lake Pepin ALOT next year. Now if winter would just bypass us I’d have it made.
Thanks, Bill
The red and white cooler is sitting on the front platform so you can see how long that platform is yet has alot of space in the rest of the boat too.
Smittys Marine in Lake City, Mn is where the boat came from. Kenny has the best prices around and is a full Alumacraft dealer. That 2XB Hull [2 full bottoms] gives you a smooth ride and the design/layout of the Alumacraft boats is very well thought out with tons of room and storage. I am VERY happy with the boat, performance, and especially the fishability of the boat. My red Lund Mr Pike 16 [the boat that replaced the 1660 Pro V in 2001] was my dream boat. Its what I wanted for many years. So you know how good a boat this new boat has to be in order for me to make the switch. Alumacraft has done wonders with their boats. I’m VERY impressed. I’m sold.
Congrats on the new and very nice ride Bill I was trying to figure out what you were in from the early pics, I knew it wasn’t your flat, and not the Mr Pike Looks like a winner to me
